Humans consumption. Sustainability. learning to live as one, Society learning to connect more with earth and the environment.

Focus Statement

My focus will be on the earths surroundings and that all living beings are connected in some way by the earth or god. Always keeping an emotional, spiritual attachment to god this attachment is because of the strings connecting to nails and the other strings and the shape of a circle as the circle can mean so many things but i interpret it as wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness. Especially the Human consumption of earths natural resources is a continual threat to our society "Humans appetite on earths environment and how we have to work together as a society to sustain the planet because we rely on the planet earth to survive.

Restoration can be found/seen in many forms. I originally chose to do it about emotional restoration, that would be built around the subject of a death of a loved one or relationship issues, which takes time to mend and restore the past relationship and learn from it to then move on with life. While working on my imagery ideas I moved towards the focus on Connections, as it was more my style.

Circular Wooden Frames

Wooden circular board
something similar to what I want to achieve

Material- String Art

The nails i have available to me to use

These images will be what i will be using to create certain pieces of my artwork.

Stage one: Steps in doing this certain piece: Find a piece of wood and then shape it. Paint and sand if needed. Measure and mark where the nails will go. hammer them in place. pick out the thread tie it down and begin the technique.

Stage two Steps: Finding a suitable piece of driftwood using this to give restoration more meaning and give the artwork sculpture more character, next is hammering in nails to configure my thread art around the wood pieces to continue on with connections between us and the nature.

Stage three Steps: searching a circular piece of wood with a white background, printing it off on water colour paper drawing straight line on the the picture with a ruler to create my line effects.

Analysis of my focus

I originally set out to do a circular wooden board/boards with a picture of someone showing emotional detachment from the world printed onto the boards with nails around the edge putting certain string patterns over the image to cover and show certain areas of the body choosing the right colour of string to show specific emotion by the colour of the string example if it were red shows anger. The challenges i will face is the distance between the nails getting them almost perfectly inline, finding someone who can add my picture onto my circular plank of wood, and picking out the right type of string to wrap around the nails which will be very time consuming. I found myself drifting away from this area but continuing this new idea of CONNECTION between the thread to nail being supported by the circular wooden base which would then push me into the direction of an earthy theme only using certain shades/colours of thread and having wood in the shape of a circle involved, as the circle can also have a deeper meaning, which can be notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness and all cyclic movement.

Eva Hesse

Eva Hesse is an American artists to come of age in the immediate aftermath of The Abstract Expressionists. She originally pursued a career in commercial textile design in New York City, but Hesse's practice as an expressionist painter led her to increasingly experiment with industrial and every-day, or "found" materials, such as rope, string, wire, rubber, and fiberglass. Although it's not personally something I am doing I was inspired by the way she could manipulate the string into certain figures and directions to become some sort of structure. Eva's work is interesting but i am focusing on connections and her work is old and new form as my work will be based more on connection and emotion.

Maurizio Anzeri

Maurizio Anzeri makes his portraits by sewing directly into found vintage photographs. His embroidered patterns garnish the figures like elaborate costumes, but also suggest a psychological aura, as if revealing the person’s thoughts or feelings. Maurizio has inspired me by he's fine detail and he has done something very similar to what i would like to achieve and he's meanings from his work is almost the same too, but my artwork will be more about the string and the connection to each nail and linking the string to the emotional attachment to the picture behind the strings.

Maurizio Anzeri Arts

Research on what a circle can mean: The circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning. It represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement, God ('God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere')

Connection meaning: A relationship in which a person or thing is linked or associated with something else. In my case the human race and the environment/earth and how we're all connected in some way.

Artist Statement: My work explores the relationship between us as a society and the earth plus the spiritual aspect of life. Eva Hesse and Maurizio Anzeri have influenced and pushed me in doing thread connections with an earthy theme behind the connections.
