What does betrothal mean?

Important stage in the process of getting married. You would stand in front of the church and it is a formal ceremony. A betrothal could only be broken by a mutual agreement. You would get married 1 or 2 months after.

  • Must be set up in front of a notary who record that he witnessed it.
  • Couple had to agree to each other
  • Bride’s father gave the bride to the groom
  • Rings, a kiss, holding hands, food, dance, singing, music, and many people showed up

How is the intention to marry announced? What happens if it is not announced previous to the event?

It was announced to reveal any impediments to marriage. Also to see if they were family. No marriages were to take place from Advent sunday to eight days after Epiphany

What is a dowry?

Property or money given to the husband, by the father of the bride upon being married.

Explain how important is a wedding ring to the Elizabethans?

It is a symbol to show that you are married, and it shows that your love is forever.
