WKHS Girls Basketball coach wins OCC-Cardinal Coach of the Year. Malcolm Saas

A few weeks ago, the OHSAA gave out end of the year honors for players and coaches throughout the OCC-Cardinal conference. One of the honorees in particular is our very own Girl’s Basketball coach, Stephanie Jones. Jones has led the wolves to an impressive 18-6 record and at the time of this article, they’re still alive in the postseason.

Team members Molly Humphrey and Camile Shiffer shared what they thought about their coach winning this award. “Our coach is motivated everyday to coach us and makes sure all of us are okay off the court as well” Humphrey said.

“I think she won this award because [she’s]... really organized, she always has a plan for practice, and she teaches us more than just basketball” Shiffer said.

After talking to Coach Jones, she seems thrilled but attributes a lot of her success to her staff and players. “Awards like these do not happen on their own. I have the best players and coaching staff and because of that I was able to earn this award. If it wasn't for the hard work and dedication from both my players and coaching these types of things would not happen… the players bought into our goals, believed in themselves, and played with determination and grit day in and day out.”

But Jones isn’t stopping here. “The next step is to compete for a district title. After the season ends we will enjoy the success we have had this season then prepare for next season. We will spend the off season working on individual and team goals to build on what we’ve accomplished this season.” The girls basketball program here at WKHS is thriving and because of Coach Jones, will be a feared opponent for years to come.
