Performing Artists Break Down Society's Traditions The Beginning of a Revolution

The Traditional Performing Arts: Music, Dance, Theater

The performing arts have provided a form of expression filling the world with endless entertainment!

An emphasis on appearance, race, gender, and sexuality have created certain stereotypes that many strive to meet in order to meet the criteria of being a performer. This has caused both mental and physical issues with performers as well perpetuate a lack of represntation of the society we live in today.

Eating Disorders, Blackface, Heterosexual Roles

The Entities who are making a difference

Lin-Manuel Miranda

Hamilton's cast represents the society we live in today

He states that Hip-Hop, Rap, and R&B are the music of a revolution and that this diverse cast is the best people to perform it

Misty Copeland
I Will What I Want

Copeland was set apart from the traditional ballerina because of the color of her skin, her athletic, curvy body and her late start to training at the age of 13

As soon as she began dancing however, it was evident how talented she was. She brought a huge African-American audience to ballet

She is a role model for many and shows that greatness comes in every size, color and shape

James Whiteside
Be Everything. Do Everything.

Whiteside is openly gay but plays heterosexual roles mainly as there is a lack of representation of the LGBTQ community in traditional ballet

Outside of ballet, he is also a singer and a professional Drag Queen

On his website he states:

"HI FRIENDS,

THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY OFFICIAL WEBSITE, MY SAFE-HOUSE FOR ALL MY CREATIVE ENDEAVORS. LET YOUR IMAGINATION RUN FREE AND LEAVE SOCIAL NORMS TO THE NORMAL. I DARE YOU TO BE EXTRAORDINARY AND DON'T FORGET, GREAT MINDS THINK FOR THEMSELVES!

BE EVERYTHING. DO EVERYTHING.

WITH LOVE, JAMES"

The world has changed since the beginning of the traditional performing arts. The context created within it should now reflect and represent the world we live in today, not one from centuries ago...
