Round Four of the Chili Wars

Cadet Winning Company Named in 2nd Annual Chili Wars, Will Face Athletic Department on February 8th

"This was a hard fought competition for the last four weeks with all cadet companies trying their hardest to win. Unfortunately, as with all competitions, there can be only one winner." —Mr. Larry McIlnay

It was "an interesting morning, to say the least," in the words of Director of Dining Services Larry McIlnay, as Alpha, Charlie, and Echo went head to head to determine who would win bragging rights in the barracks for 2017. The music was blaring with onions, celery, and peppers being chopped to the beat of the music as the cadet chefs readied their entries in time for the competition to begin at 1130 hours this past Thursday.

Mr. McIlnay reports that the competition started out to be close in the beginning as the votes started to add up, but #1 pulled away and never looked back. When the final vote was tallied, Echo Company garnered 159 votes. Alpha Company came in second with 85 votes, and the chili entry from Charlie Company came in third with 63 votes.

Echo Company will next face the staff & faculty winner, the Athletic Department, in the championship round to be decided on Thursday, February 9th.

Middle School cadets on break

Middle School Dance Scheduled for February 10th

Ms. Amy Reese, Activities Coordinator, has announced plans to hold a Middle School Dance on Friday, February 10th, from 7 to 9 PM. The dance will be held in the Social Center in Vaughan Hall. The cadets of the Middle School are inviting young ladies in Grades 7 & 8, from the Fluvanna County Middle School, as well as young ladies from other schools, home schools, and anywhere else throughout the region, to join them for this special occasion. Please help spread the word!

Car Pools

Each year, many families look to establish car pools to help transport cadets back and forth from home to school for leaves. Sometimes, however, it can be challenging to connect with other parents who might be in your area. We've established a way to help you connect with other Fork Union parents.

The first step is to log in to the Parent Portal. If you don't remember how to access the Parent Portal, we encourage you to read the detailed instructions about accessing the Parent Portal in the September 19, 2016 edition of the Front & Center newsletter:

Parent-Faculty Forum

Once you've logged in to access the Parent Portal, you will also have access to the Parent-Faculty Forum. The link to the forum can be found in the left column of the website once you are on the Parent Portal page.

Once you access the Parent-Faculty Forum, you will find a discussion thread entitled "Interested in Car Pooling?" Here you will find a link to a "carpool list" that is actually a spreadsheet stored on Google Docs. Those interested in car pooling can put their contact information on this list, divided by geographic region, for others to use in locating potential car pool partners.

You can also post your own discussion thread seeking car pool partners in your area and use the forum itself to network with other parents and coordinate car pool plans. It's your choice whether to use the "carpool list," the discussion forum, or both in order to find other parents in your area with whom you can car pool.

We hope this forum and carpool list will be helpful to you as you network with other FUMA families and establish car pools, friendships, and mutual support. This forum is available only to parents and staff members who are logged in to the website and is not visible to the general public.

Crossing Fraley Circle, by longstanding tradition, cadets salute the nation's flag as they move toward the flagpole, holding the salute for several paces.

Next major leave is Spring Leave beginning on Friday, March 10th

With the next major leave coming up on March 10th, and the campus emptying out with all cadets headed home for a well-deserved break, many families will be looking to partner up in car pools to make transportation easier. We hope you will make use of our carpool list and forum to network with other parents in your area before this next major leave.

The Guidance Department
