The British Library: Special Collections Visit

Holinshed's Chronicles Volume 1: 1577

Raphael Holinshed was a historian dating back to the 16th century collaborating with peers to chronicle and document the history of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Our group visited The British Library and had an up close and personal experience in their Special Collections. We had the once in a lifetime opportunity to hold and browse over 400 year old texts.

Holinshed's Influence on Shakespeare's Macbeth

Volume I of Holinshed's Chronicles depicts three women intervening as fate in a supposedly historical account. They were described as "creatures of the elderwood...nymphs or fairies."

The Three Witches in Macbeth

William Shakespeare took the above historical scene and transformed these women into dark and twisted characters controlling the fate of Macbeth in Macbeth.
