1.Title:Youth on the mOve 2017 International project

The situation of migrants is very well known, especially now when confronted with the actual Syrian crisis. Most of them face a life journey to an unfamiliar world they know nothing about or have a very distorted idea.

Young people, especially, are thrown in situations they often can`t manage. Young people -hosts and immigrants- need to become aware about their identity, their habits, food, traditions, culture in general and especially modify the stereotyes/biased ethnical messages that are believed to define countries/people, creating together a European mosaic of cultures, in a multicultural and more coherent European community.

At the end of the project, the students will have learned which tools to use in order to transform and improve society, building their own future.

3.The learning ouTCOMES/aims

TRANSLATION of the PLAY ” You have to be the change you want to see in the world!”

Oppressed Person: ASALA- a 15 year- old- teenager who lives in Romania for one year , not a very good student in school, because she doesnt` t get enough support from her family,but especially because of Asala`s cultural and language barriers and, especially, because of discrimination .She is an excellent student though... but only in Painting and Music.

Oppressor1 : ADRIAN, a 15 year- old boy , the kind of bully boy.One of the reasons why Asala is oppressed is her origin and religion.

Oppressed person` s Ally : ALIN, a 15 year- old boy

Oppressor 2: ROXANA, a 16 year- old girl

OppressOR 3: Geography teacher - the kind of teacher who makes the difference between Romanian students and those of other ehical origin.

NEUTRAL: Asala`s mother,-divorced, working in a supermarket,Mother is concerned only with earning money for survival.



Asala and her mother are in the kitchen having a common talk.Mother is preparing food, daughter asks for something else than beans, and mother replies:

-Other girls at your age are already married and bring money at home.

Suddenly, the phone rings.It` s Mother`s boss who needs her doing soke extrajob at work. Asala thinks that her mother is abused because she is an immigrant, and perhaps more than that her boss likes it and wants to exploit her .

Before leaving,mother receives a document with Asala` s grades and other school reminders , but Mother is in hurry as always and sigs it quickly, without reading.

STAGE 2- At school the same day

Asala and ALIN meet in the school hall and have a little chat about school.

Asala asks him if his uncle is still looking for people to distribute promotional flyers, because her mother is always pushing her to bring some money home.

They talk a while about school ,about Geography and Asala says she is sure that the Geography teacher will evaluate her again, because she feels that she is discriminated.


The scene begins with the teacher, ROXANA ,ADRIAN, in the classroom.

ALIN l enters later in the classroom, and the teacher tells him to take a seat.Asala is also late and the teacher says:

"Miss Asala, do you think it's polite to come after me? Point me on the map all countries located in ASIA.When Asala comes to Syria, the teacher says she has to remember only the important ones, not those second hand unimportant countries.

So begins oppression in this scene. ROXANA and ADRIAN are gossiping about Asala and the teacher does not react. He pretends he can `t see.In addition to this, Roxana exchanges with Adrian several subtle bullying commentaries about Asala. At the end of the scene, Asala goes to her place near ALIN and says: "I told you so ! He always evaluates me as if I were the only students in the classroom. I can not stand any more.Adrian and Roxana are so mean to me. Besides, the teacher is mocking at me too!”

STAGE 4 – At school during break

This scene has a high level of oppression on the part of ADRIAN AND ROXANA.

ADRIAN : "Did you hear? I do not want to see you here! You think an immigrant as yourself, with faith in Muhammad, a prophet so cruel that killed all those who refused being converted , who the Qur'an excuse all the abominable facts, including that AISHA ,the concubine was only a seven-year-old child ...You think that you can come to our school simply like that?

ROXANA: How can we accept a girl like you being in our group...a savage girl coming from a civilization left behind with thousands of light years ... that stalled for too many centuries ... that still applies Sharia and stoning women who do not want to get married ? We do not want Islam, nor Mahometan among us.

Listen to me: You will never finish your highschool studies.You are a stupid immigrant.Do you really think you can finish school in Romania? Tell me !

This is why Asala, in tears, says she will not come to school any more because she is "A BAD IMMIGRANT", having no chance to finish her studies.

Changing final outcome

The play will be againg staged, students are interrupting the play, changing teh most oppressive lines, by clapping and introducing arguments that advocates respect for human rights, calling on international treaties on human rights, Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the General Assembly of the UNITED NATIONS on 10 September 1948, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Asala will act firmly, without giving up school, becoming aware of totally her legal rights and more self-assertive.

Possible Injustice PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED 3/3 solutions:


1.Mother, Syrian immigrant, possible victim of forced labor by an abusive and corrupt leader who fails to pay his annual taxes, prefering to bribe local inspectors (1 minute 58)

Solution: Open discussion,appealing to Articles 3, 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UN, finally, resignation

2. Corrupt teacher that feels himself "obliged" to tolerate undesirable behaviors of his students whom he tutors in private

Solution: Honourable remuneration for teachers, review of the Teachers` Code of Ethics and its reinforcement through a consistent application of the law

3.Possible Corruption of a political system (amid greed) that can not manage its community issues (civil war, deprivation of education, hunger, poverty) so that the affected population by war is forced to take refuge in the welcoming countries

Solution: the Members of UN should implement specific laws to prevent the disaster of forced migration.

-raising awareness on the global issue of MIGRATION,by visiting museums related to writers who chose to be asylum-seekers, the students will create a local exhibition/ a vitrtual museum/ gallery with their photos taken at the museum

-raising our students' awareness by taking responsibility on both the micro scale of their local communities and on the macro level of the European context.

-developing our students` understanding on the migration issue, focusing on the topic of diversity/inclusion of foreign people through understanding of the culture the migrants belong to

-investigate the most important common European cultural issues and values

-organising specific workshops using nonformal methods and tools (Human Library / Photo Storytelling / Forum Theater)

-creating a guide / multilingual dictionary (with the most frequent words) for young immigrants who arrive in Europe

Celebrating BeautIful National Tradition of ”MĂRȚIȘOR”

4.The activity description

The work process will have the duration from OCTOBER 2016 TO JUNE 2017.

The students will make research in order to find out examples of MIGRANT WRITERS and make museum trips to their memorial houses in their origin country.

The students are going to exchange materials, photos, videoos, mails, using chats and forums/Facebook page ”Toma N.Socolescu” Projects in English, Spanish or Romanian, thus improving their skills to speak in foreign languages, cooperating with classmates and with students of other countries, in the spirit of the collaborative work, activity with potential to lead to cultural school exchanges with the partners.

Attending the workshop „Flight and migration in formal education" and organising introductory sessions

The meaning of being an EUROPEAN is to keep WHAT IS NATIONAL ,first!
Learning to express your GRATITUDE for everything is the first step for PEACE & TOLERANCE!

Organising a debate - Is it possible to have a European culture, without losing one's own regional or national culture?
