Ronald Reagan And how he impacted the cold war

Early Life- Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 to a very poor family. They struggled to get by year after year. He later went to Dixon High School and even later Eureka College. In collage he had degrees in sociology and economics. He graduated from college in 1932.

Jobs- Everyone had a hard time finding jibs because of the Great Depression. As he was looking, he was turned down time after time.He later landed a job as a radio announcer for the WOC radio station. It grew very poplars the year went on. He later transferred to a close “sister” of the station called the WHO to become a sportscaster. He talked for many popular teams including the Chicago Cubs. It paid very well and was even more popular than his first radio station. Later on he quit his job and moved to Los Angeles to become a movie star. At first he appeared in very low budget "B" films. In his first few years in Hollywood he made roughly 15 movies. As time passed on, he grew more popular with the public. One of his biggest accomplishments while in Hollywood was that his movie, All American, almost won an academy award.

Reagan married his first wife, Jane Wyman in 1940. She was an academy award winner and together they had two children. They were married for 8 years and got divorced in 1948. He later then married his second wife until death, Nancy Davis in 1952.

Started speaking out his political believes like no communism in the United States. Spoke out because he believed that they were trying to “infiltrate” Hollywood. During his Hollywood career, he switched from democratic to republican. He later became a governor of California. As governor he tried to cut government spending and taxes. Biggest thing he did as governor was to end violent student protests by sending the National Guard.

In 1976 he ran for President but lost to General Ford. He decided to try again in 1980 and • Won against George W. Bush in the primaries. Reagan liked Bush so he made him his Vice President if he won. As the republican, he ran against against Jimmy Carter as the democrat and won.

Important actions that occurred as President- John Hinckley shot the President on March 30, 1981. Emergency surgery took place. Made it though and took office again in August

quote from Reagan after returning to office.

Facing the Cold War: What he did- Long before becoming president, Ronald Reagan claimed, "The prevailing policies of containment and détente would not bring a satisfactory end to the Cold War. The objective of containment was to stop the Soviet Union from forcibly spreading communism beyond the territories it already ruled or dominated. But the United States would not attempt to push the Soviets out of their established spheres of control in certain regions of the world.” -Ronald Reagan. {Détente- (a French word meaning release from tension.) o "So far détente's been a one-way street that the Soviet Union has used to pursue its own aims. Their goal must be the promotion of world revolution and a one world communist or socialist state." – Ronald Reagan.

A real world example of Détente

The Reagan Doctrine- This was Reagan attempt to end the Cold War by its actions to end communism. It was the main piece of the United States foreign policy. Quote from the doctrine, " "[I]t is the Soviet Union that runs against the tide of history by denying human freedom and human dignity to its citizens." "Our military strength is a prerequisite to peace, but let it be clear we maintain this strength in the hope it will never be used, for the ultimate determinant in the struggle that's now going on in the world will not be bombs and rockets, but a test of wills and ideas, a trial of spiritual resolve, the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish, the ideals to which we are dedicated."

Reagan became reelected in 1984

Iran-Contra Affair- In July of 1985 the USA sent 508 tanks from Israel to Iran to exchange for the prisoners they held captive. The exchange was a success. The main hostage was Benjamin Weir. Israelis (Israel) offered missiles to Iran for another mission to get hostages back. Iran did not take the offer at first so the Israelis had to offer more missiles. Iran agreed and this transaction was a success. The US public had no idea about this affair until later on in Reagan's presidency.

The Soviet Union's leader died so a new man came into rule. Reagan meets him on November 19, 1985 and they agree to reduce each countries amount of nuclear weapons. On October 11 1985, the leaders of the Soviet Union, Iceland, and the USA decide to meet and to destroy the world’s nuclear weapons.

The Soviet Union's new ruler introduced a new factor other than communism. He introduced Glasnost and Perestroika. Glasnost or "openness" meant to allow ideas and others goods into the Soviet Union. Perestroika allowed limited market to the people of the Soviet Union. This was the end of the Cold War

Reagan ended his term in January of 1989. He went home with his wife Nancy and spent some time in their home in LA. He later died there June 5, 2004 at the age of 93.
