Individual versus society Lilian VaNg

Universal Theme: Don't judge someone based on what's on the outside.

Of Mice And Men

"Tell you what made me stop that. One day a bunch of guys was standin' around up on the Sacramento River. I was feelin' pretty smart. I turns to Lennie and says,'Jump in.' An' he jumps. Couldn't swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him. An' he was so damn nice to me for pullin' him out. Clean forgot I told him to jump in"(40).

This explains that although Lennie is very tall and large, he wouldn't hurt anybody nor anything. When Lennie almost drowned, he was nice to George even though he told Lennie to jump in.

"The boy grew rapidly, but after the fifth year, his brain did not grow any more. At six, Tularecito could do the work of a grown man. The long finger of his hands were more dexterous and stronger than most men's fingers. On the ranch, they made use of the fingers of Tularecito. Hard knots could not long defy him. He had planting hands, tender fingers that never injured a young plant nor burised the surfaces of a grafting limb." Also Tularecito had an amazing gift: with his thumbnail, he could carve remarkably correct animals from sandstone" (2).

This explains even though Tularecito is big in size, he is only a child whose body is large as a man. Although his body is large and intimidating in size, he has gentle hands when it comes to tending to plants. He can also carve perfect models of animals with the tip of his thumbnail.

The Chrysanthemums

"She took off a glove and put her strong fingers down into the forest of new green chrysanthemums sprouts that were growing around the old roots. She spread the leaves and looked down among the close-growing stems. No alhids were there, no sow bugs or snails or cutworms. Her terrier fingers destroyed such pests before they could get started" (1).

This explains that although she isn't allowed to do a mans job, she tends to the garden. Which is a difficult task to do while keeping pests away from the plants. If she is able to do this then she is able to do a mans handy work.

Real World Connection

People often focus on the negatives of a person than on the positives of the person. Many people judge one another based on first impression and how the way they dress or by their status. For example, people often believe that the homeless are all alcoholics and drug abusers. But the thing is, people assume too quickly, they don't stop a think what the person is capable of.
