Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day

I walk a lonely road, The only one that I have ever know. Don't know where it goes But it's home to me and I walk alone I walk this empty street On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams Where the city sleeps And I'm the only one and I walk alone I walk alone I walk alone I walk alone I walk a...My shadow's the only one that walks beside me My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me'Til then I walk alone Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, aaah-ah, Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah I'm walking down the line That divides me somewhere in my mind On the border line Of the edge and where I walk alone Read between the lines Of what's messed up and everything's alright Check my vital signs To know I'm still alive and I walk alone I walk alone I walk alone I walk alone I walk a...My shadow's the only one that walks beside me My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me 'Til then I walk alone Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, aaah-ah Ah-ah, ah-ah I walk alone I walk a...I walk this empty street On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams Where the city sleeps And I'm the only one and I walk a...My shadow's the only one that walks beside me My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me 'Til then I walk alone...

"My Shadows the only one that walks beside me, My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating. Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me, Till then I walk alone."

"The first thing I did when I got off at Penn Station, I went into this phone booth. I felt like giving somebody a buzz. I left my bags right outside he booth so that I could watch them, but as soon as I was inside, I couldn't think of anybody to call up." Pg. 59

This relates to Holden because it shows his loneliness. He leaves his school and then he has no where to go so he's all alone, and this song shows it by it basically being Holden and his shadow just like they say in the song. And him having no one to call shows that he's all alone and this situation is one reason he becomes depressed later in the story.

Use Somebody- Kings of Leon

"If i told you want to know the truth, I don´t know what I think about it. I´m sorry I told so many people about it. About all I know is, I sort of miss everybody I told about. Even old Stradlater and Ackley, for instance. I think I even miss that goddam Maurice. It´s funny. Don´t ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.¨ (Pg. 214)

This song by Kings of Leon also shows Holden's loneliness in the novel. Holden is very lonesome but all he wants is to connect with someone, he especially wants it to be Jane. But he meets and talks to many girls in the story, but when he gets the chance to interact with them he either backs away or finds something to not like about them because none of them make him feel how he felt with Jane. He also does this with other characters in the book like Ackley. The line "I've been roaming around Always looking down at all I see Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach You know that I could use somebody", can relate to Holden, because he is constantly looking for someone to talk to and to prevent himself from connecting with them he changes his name. He lies to people because he doesn't want to miss people like he says on page 214, even if they aren't people he doesn't like he still doesn't want it to happen.

Human - Christina Perri

¨One thing about packing depressed me a little. I had to pack these brand-new ice skates my mother had practically just sent me a couple of days before. That depressed me. I could see my mother going in Spaulding´s and asking the salesman a million dopy questions—and here I was getting the ax again. It made me feel pretty sad. She bought me the wrong kind of skates—I wanted racing skates and she bought hockey—but it made me sad anyway.¨ (Pg. 51-52)

The line "But I'm only human and I bleed when I fall down I'm only human and I crash and I break down I'm only human. I can fake a smile, I can fake a laugh." This relates o Holden especially when he's packing because he lied to his parents about getting kicked out of school and he starts to feel depressed because the skates were a gift from his mother and they bring back old memories. Also he's depressed because even though his mother got him the wrong pair of skates he still appreciated it because she tried, and he can't even be honest with her that he left school. Also this relates to Holden, because in the novel he constantly lies to people so he doesn't get close to them. And in the song she says she can fake a smile she does it to make the other people around her feel happy and Holden probably does it because he's never had much attention on him since his brother died. He even says on page 16, "I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life."

Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls

"Allie's dead – You always say that! If somebody's dead and everything, and in Heaven, then it isn't really– I know he's dead! Don't you think I know that? I can still like him, though, can't I? Just because somebody's dead, you don't just stop liking them, for God's sake – especially if they were about a thousand times nicer than the people you know that're alive and all." (Pg. 171-172)

This song could relate to Holden by his brother in the song it's about a girl but it could be about his brother when they say, "And I'd give up forever to touch you 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be And I don't wanna go home right now." When he has that conversation about Allie with Phoebe he gets upset because he knows its true but he doesn't like saying out loud and he misses Allie and this could be a reason why he shuts people out because he doesn't want this feeling about Allie being gone to keep happening. Also he doesn't want to go home because his parents don't know he got kicked out of school. Also when they say And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am." He doesn't want to get close with anyone because he thinks that no one understands him or what he's going through. And he's trying to find his place in the world and it's hard for him because he's becoming more and more depressed.

You Found Me - The Fray

¨He's dead now. He got leukemia and died when we were up in Maine, on July 18, 1946. You'd have liked him. He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent. He was terrifically intelligent.¨ (Pg. 38)

This song relates to Holden because when his brother died his parents weren't there for him, no one was, he had to go through his brother's death alone. And when they sing :lost and Insecure." it could relate to him because he was hurting when his brother died, and he was lonely and now he's still waiting for someone to "find" him, but it might not happen because hedoesn't like getting close to people. Basically all of these songs relate to Holden because they're sad and he's depressed and broken and most of the artist were to when they wrote these songs.
