Documentation of Middle Tennessee

Sumner County Tennessee

Sumner County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 160,645. Its county seat is Gallatin, and its largest city is Hendersonville. The county is named for American Revolutionary War hero General Jethro Sumner.

Cragfont is a state historic site and historic house located in Castalian Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee. It was the home of General James Winchester. Construction was started in 1798 and completed in 1802 by artisans from his home state of Maryland.

Wynnewood State Historic Site, also known as Castalian Springs, and located in Castalian Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee, includes the largest existing log structure in Tennessee. The main building was built in 1828 by A. R. Wynne, William Cage, and Stephen Roberts, to serve as a stagecoach inn for travelers between Nashville and Knoxville.

This impressive historic site consists of two railroad tunnels for the Louisville and Nashville railroad and two small forts built by federal troops in 1862 and garrisoned until the end of the war. In August 1862, Morgan's Confederates disabled the north tunnel for almost 100 days by crashing a locomotive in the tunnel and starting a fire.

Sumner County was created in 1786, when Tennessee was still part of North Carolina. The county had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries, as evidenced by Mississippian period mounds still visible at Castalian Springs. Longhunters traveled to the area as early as the 1760s, following Indian paths through the area. By the early 1780s, several outposts had been erected, most notably Mansker's Station, built by Kasper Mansker at modern Goodlettsville, and Bledsoe's Station, built by Isaac Bledsoe at Castalian Springs.

Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee and the county seat of Davidson County.[6] It is located on the Cumberland River in the north central part of the state. The city is a center for the music, healthcare, publishing, banking and transportation industries, and home to numerous colleges and universities.

Rugby Tennessee

Nestled among tall pines and oaks just south of the Big South Fork National Park, lies Historic Rugby, Tennessee; a British-founded village whose Utopian dream of a better life in America has never quite died. This is the story of the Rugby Colony- an aspiring Utopia.
