College Action Plan For Wardell Huff Jr.

Prepared on January 7, 2017 by

Wardell is a pensive and mature young man who's currently in the seventh grade. I discussed the G.R.E.A.T. college admissions formula with him and gave him some ideas as to how he can start applying the principles in middle school.

During our discussion, Wardell named his favorite subjects: English, history and science. Despite the fact that he is not a fan of school in general, he is a very hard worker and will complete a task with intense focus and diligence. Wardell is currently taking Spanish as a 7th grader.

Wardell indicated that he is interested in studying International business and or some form of law. Wardell is involved in great community service activities including an effort that he participates in with his family. He spent last summer in an internship at his father's law firm. This gave Wardell some insight as to what it's like to work in a corporate environment.

Extracurricular Activities

Wardell is involved in Taekwondo, an activity to which he dedicates a fair amount of time. He also has an interest in science and had a company in which she went in and taught scientific principles and did experiments with younger students.

Avatar (Digital Footprint)

I talked with Wardell about making sure that he kept a clean digital footprint. One thing in particular that I cautioned about was banter over the internet while playing interactive games. I warned that this could lead to unwanted attention from shady characters.

Since Wardell is a 7th grader, the college admissions testing process hasn't quite begun. The one thing I mentioned during this section of the meeting is the fact that College Board has teamed up with Khan Academy in order to make sure that students know the areas they have to strengthen after they take the PSAT.

I challenged Wardell to research three colleges (Christopher Newport University, George Mason University and The College of William and Mary). This inquiry will help him learn important facts such as the location of each school, the number of undergraduate students at each college and which majors the schools have to offer. This exploration project will help guide Wardell as he embarks upon this important season of college exploration.
