Welcome to Reception at Kirk Sandall Infant School

We are so pleased to welcome you to Kirk Sandall Infant School and our Foundation Stage. This page provides you with further information about the first year of full time school. We hope that you find it useful in preparing your child for making a successful transition into their new class.

Our Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is made up of four themes: The Unique Child, Positive Relationships, The Enabling Environment and Learning and Development. These themes are important as collectively they ensure young children make great progress.

In the Learning and Development theme there are 7 areas of learning which the curriculum is organised into. The first three are known as the Prime Areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. These support and scaffold the four Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Through purposeful play children build up key knowledge and skills in the seven areas of learning. Teaching staff carefully observe children to understand what they can do, how they are learning and use this information to plan the next steps in their development. Learning takes place both indoors and outdoors and in all weathers. Teaching can take place in small or large groups, guided by an adult or sometimes independently in response to a specific task or challenge. These learning opportunities are planned to ensure children can confidently use and apply their knowledge and skills independently and prepare them for the later stages of schooling in Key Stage One.

Important Information

Bringing and collecting your child: It is essential that we know who is going to collect your child at the end of the school day. On the occasion where you need to arrange someone else to come in your place you must inform your child’s class teacher.

Parking: Please be aware there are ‘no stopping’ restrictions in place outside school. Please do not park on the yellow lines. Please could you also refrain from parking on the raised bumps for the safety of the children. Parking is not permitted in the school car park unless you are collecting your child in an emergency.

Attendance: If your child is unable to attend school for any reason please telephone the school office that morning before 8.30am.

School Meals: All children at Kirk Sandall Infant School are entitled to universal free school meals, for more information please go to http://www.doncaster.gov.uk/services/schools/free-school-meals. The weekly menu is always available to view on our website https://www.ksinfantschool.co.uk/school-office/school-meals. Children receive a daily choice of four meal options from a colour coded system: Red - Hot meal containing meat/fish, Green - Vegetarian hot meal, Yellow - Jacket potato with one filling, Blue - Sandwich with one filling. We ask that parents discuss their child's dinner options each day so they are prepared to make an appropriate choice during the morning register taken by their teacher. Children then wear a coloured wrist band during the dinner service to ensure that the catering team provide the meal they have chosen.

Medical Conditions: Please inform us of any medical conditions or allergies that your child has as soon as possible to enable us to make the necessary plans and preparations for caring for their needs. If your child needs medication administering at school please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Uniform: It is recommended that pupils wear school dress at all times. We ask that children wear a grey skirt, pinafore or trousers, white or blue blouse / shirt or polo shirt and either a grey or royal blue sweatshirt, cardigan or jumper. Our embroidered school uniform is supplied by My Clothing and can be ordered online at https://myclothing.com/. We encourage children to try to be independent when taking their coats and shoes on and off. It would really help them if you could bear this in mind when choosing your child’s clothing.

What your child needs to bring to school: We love taking our learning outside– even in the winter! Please ensure that your child is well prepared for this by bringing the appropriate clothing such as wellies, water proof coat or an all-in-one suit. They also need to bring a named water bottle to drink throughout the school day and a book bag to carry their reading book to and from school. Please note; all items of your child’s clothing and their belongings must be clearly labelled with their name in permanent pen, sewn in labels or strong adhesive stickers.

School Milk: Reception children are entitled to free school milk every day until their 5th birthday. After this date there is a small fee. Your starter information pack will tell you how to register your child through the Cool Milk website: https://www.coolmilk.com/parents/. Failure to register your child will result in them not being able to receive any milk. Children will also be able to snack on fresh fruit every day.

Partnership with Parents

We really encourage a strong partnership between home and school so please tell us what your child is interested in, what they enjoy doing and any new learning moments or achievements they have so that we are able to celebrate these and build upon them in school. Each class has their own email address to enable you to email your child’s class teacher photos, videos and stories. Likewise, we aim to share and celebrate with you the developments your child makes as they progress over the year.
