JMU Comes Alive After 5! A guide to evening and weekend campus activities Thursdays - Sundays.

Fall 2019. This newsletter is sent out twice a semester with the goal of keeping you informed of some fun events happening on campus in the evenings and on the weekends, focusing on events that occur Thursdays through Sundays. Please scroll down for events that are occurring August 29, 2019 – October 13, 2019. All events have a link to the event or sponsor website. Next edition will be coming your way mid October.

Student Org Night

Pack the Park - Saturday, September 21

Attend UREC’s Pack the Park at University Park and enjoy watching the activities or register to participate. Free food, music and giveaways!

Team Challenge Course Open House

This is your chance to experience the TEAM Challenge Course without a group reservation, sign up for your spot today!

  • Saturday, September 21 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 21 from 12 - 1 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 21 from 1 - 2 p.m.

Additional Pack the Park Events Saturday, September 21:

  • Splash Dash from 2 - 3 p.m. Register Here Join this fun run full of water activities and obstacles. This is an easy, 1 mile course that can be taken at your own pace, but be prepared to get soaked!
  • Cornhole Tournament from 12 - 2 p.m. Register Here Come to UREC’s Pack the Park to participate in the Cornhole tournament! One registration per team.
  • Cooking Competition from 12 - 2 p.m. Register Here . This is a “chopped” style outdoor cooking competition where participants work in teams of 2 with a 2 burner camp stove and will be required to use a mystery ingredient to create a dish that is visually appealing, delicious and nutritious. Food provided.

Belay and Climb

If you have climbed a few times before and are ready to take the next step, this is a great program for you!

Try to Kayak

This is your chance to try out whitewater kayaing in the UREC pool! No previous experience is necessary.

  • Thursday, September 12 from 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.

  • Thursday, October 10 from 9 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Get Active - Off Campus Adventures

Full Moon Canoe Trip

We will take advantage of the full moon to lead a relaxing paddle on “Lake Shenandoah” a flat water section of the Shenandoah River.

  • Saturday, September 14 from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Canoe the Shenandoah Trip

Join in for a canoe adventure where you can forget about the pace of campus life and spend time watching blue herons, bald eagles, and osprey in their natural habitat.

  • Sunday, September 15 from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Mountain Biking

This mountain bike ride will be on the Narrow Back Trail, a newly renovated trail in the George Washington Forest! Beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders welcome! Bike and helmet are provided by UREC Adventure (or you can bring your own).

  • Saturday, October 5 from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Full Moon Hike

Enjoy a local hike illuminated by the magical glow of the full moon!

  • Sunday, October 13 from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Introduction to Stand Up Paddle Boarding Trip

Experience why Stand up Paddleboarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world!

  • Saturday, September 28 from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Introduction to White Water Kayaking Trip

We will introduce you to all the gear, find the correct boat for you, and make sure you gain experience handling and exiting the boat before we go to the river. A pre-trip meeting and skill session is required for this trip.

  • Saturday, September 21 from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Introduction to Rock Climbing Trip

Join us for fantastic day of climbing as we travel to one of our local climbing crags. These trips are open to all interested in the sport of rock climbing regardless of experience or ability.

Paddle Fest

Spend an afternoon on the river at the Town of Shenandoah River Park! Canoes, kayaks, and stand up paddeboards will be available for use.

Evening Adventures

2 Wheels & 2 Scoops

Join in this bike ride that starts and ends at UREC and includes a stop for tasty treats at Kline’s Dairy Bar! Bike and helmets are available from UREC at no cost.

  • Friday, September 20 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Friday, September 27 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Bouldering

Come out and have a great afternoon bouldering at one of our local areas. No previous knowledge or skill is required.

Intro to Mountain Biking

Beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders welcome! Mountain bikes are provided or bring your own.

UPB Casino Night

What happens in Festival stays in Festival! Join us for a night at the casino with Black Jack, Poker, Roulette, and a Prize Wheel! Students will be given Duke Dog bucks to play with and can cash out to earn tickets to use for a raffle for great incentives!
