Canning Vale Primary School 22 February 2019

Principal's Message
Daniel Bergin, Principal

Greetings from Canning Vale Primary School

We have had a wonderful three weeks settling back into a new school year. Students are looking particularly sharp in their school uniforms and following the school dress code, wearing our uniform with pride. And why not? We have so much to be proud of here! The year has started with everyone showing PRIDE, RESPECT and EXCELLENCE in all they do, living the words of our school mantra.

When we talk of PRIDE, we refer to a humble and content sense of attachment toward a place, and a feeling of fulfilment and belonging. How wonderful to feel like this towards our school and towards this collect group of people who make up our community.

RESPECT is about having a due regard for someone or something. It’s about being kind and considerate of other people and of their property. It is so important to teach the concept of respect to children at a young age, as this virtue will help them to develop positive relationships with others throughout their life.

EXCELLENCE at Canning Vale PS means be your absolute best and have high expectations of yourself. We want to encourage our students to learn from their mistakes and not limit themselves. If they focus and have what we call a ‘growth mindset’, they will be achieve their full potential.

All of this however, means nothing if we don’t model these behaviours and values ourselves. As adults who are role models and mentors for our children, it is so important that we show them exactly what these three words mean in our own lives. Do we show PRIDE, RESPECT and EXCELLENCE in our lives and do our children see us as living, breathing examples of this? This question is a tough one as we all fall, we all make mistakes, we all miss the mark… yet when this happens we need to get back up, dust ourselves off and move forward, always trying to reach higher, always aiming to live a life that models PRIDE, RESPECT and EXCELLENCE.

Looking forward to another great year at this great school.

Kind Regards

Daniel

Chaplain's Chat

Thought for the fortnight,

Chaplains are qualified in pastoral care and youth work. They respect all people, no matter who they are, where they’re from, or what their personal belief system is.

Welcome to another exciting academic year.

My name is Tina Lowther and I am your Chaplain here at Canning Vale Primary School. Canning Vale has a wonderfully welcoming feel and I have appreciated becoming part of our school community for the past 3 years. You’ll find me in the Chaplain room located in De Grey Block, Room 3 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, so please say hello when you see me around.

It’s my hope as your Chaplain to be available to listen, care, affirm and promote well-being, acceptance and resilience. I look forward to continuing to support our community and families make a difference for our children.

What does a YouthCARE chaplain do?

Our motto is Respect, Compassion, Service and it’s our aim to:

  • Provide pastoral care for staff, students and families.
  • Link school with local community, support agencies and organizations.
  • Assist and support in school events.
  • Facilitate pastoral support programs and resources.
  • Support, mentor and encourage the school community.

What can I do for you?

Programs and Activities I am involved in include:

  • Providing a safe inviting space for Pastoral contact and appointments on a daily basis with students including opening the Chaplain room each lunchtime.Classroom programs aimed at promoting social / emotional well-being and supporting young people through difficult life changes.
  • Assisting families connecting with the school and building rapport through provision of pastoral care and support.

My role at Canning Vale PS as Chaplain holds some flexibility which means I can make myself available for you in times of need. Please contact me via email or phone if there is anything you wish to discuss to help make things easier with your child's education.

And finally, something more to ponder as we begin to navigate our way through this term……

Even the smallest act of caring for another person is like a drop of water – it will make ripples throughout the entire pond.

Canning Vale Campus P&C News

Welcome back to school everyone!

I hope everything is going well and everyone enjoyed their holidays. I am certainly excited about 2019; my youngest daughter has started Kindergarten at CVPS and she is enjoying it immensely. All three younger kids are in school now! We have a lot planned at the P&C this year and I am looking to an eventful year of Picnics, Stalls, Disco's, Assemblies, cookbooks, BBQs and many other events during the year!

As you can see from the Fundraising and Canteen articles, we have a lot planned going forward, particularly the Family Picnic this year being co-ordinated by Zoe Boyes. We are all looking forward to a fun afternoon ... keep Facebook handy for details!

At the P&C we have had some more attrition as both our Vice President Melissa and our Uniform Shop Coordinator have left the community, moving far and wide. As such, we need a volunteer to co-ordinate the Second Hand Uniform shop on Wednesday assemblies. If you have time to please step up to run this great service - from 8.30am to about 10am. We had a pre-term sale on Saturday the 2nd of February. James Lucas our Fund raising coordinator did an amazing job, turning over about $400 worth of second hand clothes.

This year we are looking forward to updating our P&C email addresses and contact arrangements with a new domain name. Details will be updated on the school page very soon.

In Week 8 this term, we will be holding our annual AGM where all executive members will be stepping down. As mentioned, we are short on executive members with only 19 paid members representing our entire parent/citizen school community making it very difficult to get ten people around a table to appropriately spend the funds that our amazing fundraising team raise. So please come to the AGM! Join! Be involved and make the P&C even bigger and better than it is!

Kind Regards

Megabites Canteen News

What a start to the year in the canteen! The Menu has been updated for the new school year with only a few minor changes. We have increased the pricing on pastries and the chicken roll. Besides this and the addition of Spearmint milk there have been very few changes to the menu. Copies of the menu are available online or feel free to see me in the canteen or the lovely ladies in the office if you would like a paper copy.

Term 1 special lunch will be later in the term once details are finalised.

Fundraising News

Welcome back to another fantastic year at Canning Vale Primary School everyone. With all the initial back to school costs, we tend to try and keep Term 1 fundraising as low as possible to not be another burden on your expenses. So for this term we only have a few Items.

Coming up next month is the annual Community School Picnic, so keep an eye out for the details as these become available and come down and join us for a picnic on the oval and meet and chat with some of the Teachers, Principals, Board Members and P&C Members, as well as the other parents. It makes for a great informal meet and greet of the greater school community, so I hope to see you all there.

Shortly we will be sending home the annual Easter donations request slips. As per previous years this is for the raffle that will be drawn at the end of term. We like to have a large variety of items to be able to make up a lot of individual prizes (we have exceeded 100 prizes in the past) which makes for a lot of winners at raffle time. Raffle tickets and prize draws will be at the end of term with Easter falling in the school holidays again this term.

The next P&C meeting in March will include the AGM, this is when all P&C positions are vacated and nominated for and reassigned. This year we will again have a large number of vacancies so if you would like to put your hand up and lend a hand around the school as a part of the P&C please have a word with our existing members like myself or our President Mike Lennane, there will also be a few of us at the picnic, to discuss what it’s like and the best way to help. If you can't make the meeting you can always nominate in absence as not all positions require regular meeting attendance.

Volunteers Needed

Here at CVPS, we are proud of the Volunteer Program that assists so many students in class.

We encourage retired people from our community to come in to our school and use the skills that they have built up over the years. This may be an hour a week, a morning or several mornings depending on your role and interest.

Here are just a few examples of how you can help us:

  • Recess Time-Volunteers may like to teach a group of children how to knit, play chess, or develop another skill, in a recess time break. It could also be to supervise and talk to a small group of children building with LEGO or construction materials. This keeps children actively occupied at recess time and encourages friendships.
  • Art- Our art teacher (Mrs Appleby) is looking for someone who could take some material bags home and sew the hem and handles on.
  • Classroom Support is always needed in the junior classrooms with small group/individual work, preparation of activities, or simply reading a book to a child and listening to stories being read out.

If you would like to volunteer in some way please email the Volunteer Program Coordinator-Tracy Tolcon Tracy.Tolcon@education.wa.edu.au

Volunteers will need to apply for or have a Working With Children Check.

Student Health Care Summary Form

We have made a change to our medical form. Rather than completing a health form for every excursion, you will only need to complete the one Student Health Care Summary Form which will be sent home with the first excursion of the year. This form must be completed for all students, signed and returned with the excursion paperwork. The details will be recorded on the student’s records and will cover all future excursions. Currently students in Years 3 – 6 have received the form and it is vital that it is returned to your child’s class teacher. Students in years K to 2 will receive theirs shortly.

Please note that if there are any changes to your child’s health, that you contact the office immediately to update the details.

If you have misplaced the form, you can pick up a new one from the office or it can be found on the school’s website.
