BOOK WEEK 2021

The National theme for Book Week this year was, 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds'. The Primary students from both campuses enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the week.

On Monday, students were treated to a virtual stage show of the book 'Little Light', which opened their eyes to how our worlds can be enriched by other cultures. This show was presented by Tony Bones. Tony is an experienced Drama, Dance & English teacher. The show included dance, drama, puppetry, music, digital elements and so much more.

During the week there were a variety of exciting learning opportunities taking place in classes. Some students enjoyed looking at the cultures of other "worlds" and produced artworks based on the story of 'Little Light,' while others did activities focusing on other stories that had been short listed for Book Week.

Special Book Week assemblies and dress up days were held at both campuses. We were so impressed with the creativity of parents and students - such colourful costumes! During the assemblies each class shared something they had learnt or been involved in during the week. As part of our focus on missions; looking into the worlds of other children, their needs and what we can learn from their culture; we launched our annual Operation Christmas shoeboxes during the assemblies.

Students were also able to purchase books from the Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you so much to families for supporting this. The final total overall was $4243 between both campuses, equating in $1272 in rewards - which is a mammoth effort. As always, Book Week was a special week at our College.

Year 9 Camp

The Year 9 students from both campuses went on camp to Adare Campsite, Victor Harbor from Monday 23 August to Friday 27 August. Here are some student reflections about the camp:

"Camp was pretty challenging, but I had lots of fun and made many new friends as well as memories. The hike pushed me the most, however, I am glad I was able to accomplish it. There were great views! Surfing and the bike ride were for sure my favourite activities." Hope, Year 9

"The hike was challenging but so rewarding. I loved viewing God's beautiful creations. The coastal cliff views were breath-taking and we saw many creatures including dolphins along the way." Keturah, Year 9

"I enjoyed getting to know the Morphett Vale students and developing stronger friendships on camp. The challenging activities made us work together as a team." Emma, Year 9

"I enjoyed the range of activities that got us out into nature including the Heysen Trail hike, Flying Kiwi giant swing, bike ride and surfing." Greg, Year 9

EXPERIENCING THE WORKING WORLD

Year 10 Work Experience

Brianna at Hosking Interior Design

"My Work Experience placement was at Hosking Interior Design on King William Road. I worked in the studio for five days, creating a project of my own and learning the design process. I was given a task brief and had to design the ideal apartment for my clients. This included drawing out different floor-plans to see what worked best with the current architecture of the apartment, making a mood board of materials and inspiration, researching furniture and creating a 3D model of my design using SketchupThroughout the week I got the opportunity to sit in on a few meetings where sales representatives from different companies came in to advertise their new product range, which was a great experience. It was interesting to think about how many things need to be considered when choosing materials for a design.

I was granted access to their ‘material library’ which is a room filled floor to ceiling with shelves of stones, textiles, paint samples, carpet and flooring options, tiles – practically everything you would need in an interior. This was my favourite room, as I loved exploring all of the different options and thinking of all I could do if given the time. Due to this, my favourite part of the design process was making the mood board. My clients requested a mix of city industrial and bohemian style for their apartment, so I had to choose materials, textures and colours to suit this, as well as accommodate their interior to their busy lifestyle. I greatly enjoyed this placement and am thankful for the wonderful ladies I was working alongside for the eye-opening experience, definitely a highlight of my year." Brianna, Year 10

Kim at Grieve Gillet Anderson

"During my work experience at Grieve Gillet Anderson, I was fortunate enough to have experienced firsthand and learnt the many different aspects of architecture. On my first day, I was warmly welcomed by the staff and was taught so much about drafting and using software such as AutoCAD and Sketchup. The skills I learnt at my work placement are talking to clients, using the software and accurately sketching and measuring floorplans. I believe that work experience is an excellent way to find jobs within your career path." Kim, Year 10

Cohen at Vintek

"For Work Experience I went to a Vintek which is in an office building in the city. While I was there I crushed hard drives and setup / imaged mini computers. I learnt that organisation isn't a priority when it comes to wires in the I.T. workplace. I liked it because they let me do higher level stuff I wouldn't expect I would be allowed to do." Cohen, Year 10

Caleb
Abby at Rare Blend Hair Studio

"I went to Rare Blend Hair Studio for my Work Experience week. Throughout the week, I learnt a lot of new helpful skills. I helped foil hair, mix hair dye colours and welcomed customers into the salon. I learnt how to cut hair, perm hair, and style hair. I had such a great time learning how to work in the workforce." Abby, Year 10

Ryan at Woodcroft Library

"During my work experience, I was introduced to many of the unseen tasks the Woodcroft Library had to offer, such as graphic design, finical work, website coding, Storytime with the kids, etc. I had such a blast and I have learned so many new things about the workplace." Ryan, Year 10

Ella with the Year 3 class, Morphett Vale campus
Michaela at Echunga Primary School

"I went to Echunga Primary School and worked with children in Year 3/4. Their cohort was called 'Ibis'. Each class has a name to sum up the group in total since they are all mixed classes. While I was at Echunga I got to know each individual student. I helped them with maths mostly. I observed many smart teaching techniques. For example, I learnt that using pop sticks can help keep the kids engaged. I think that I would honestly consider becoming a teacher for Year 3 and 4 students. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and getting to know and love each child."  Michaela, Year 10

Zoe at the Centre for Cancer Biology with Dr Phil Gregory
Grace at SVCC ELC, Morphett Vale campus

"I went to the Early Learning Centre at the Morphett Vale campus. During this week I worked with the kids, wiped down the tables, sorted out activities and organised the snacks. I also helped the kids when they went up to the library to borrow books. I really enjoyed working with all of the staff and children and I have found that this will be a great career later in life. I had developed a great connection with the children there and was sad to leave them." Grace, Year 10

Daniel at SAGE Automation
Ebony at Family Enrichment Centre, Christies Beach Baptist Church

"I attended work experience in the Family Enrichment Centre (FEC) at Christies Beach Baptist Church. Where they aid those suffering homelessness, domestic violence and unemployed with financial issues. I learned a lot about the booking process and what is expected when handling vulnerable clients. The FEC are heavily reliant on volunteers to help with simple maintenance issues and file prepping. I was taught the responsibilities of making volunteers comfortable and never overloaded tasks, and keeping them in the workplace.

My supervisor took me to multiple meetings including one at the Onkaparinga building where I observed a food security meeting plus afternoon tea and saw how the community is involved in the FEC. In the community, FEC worked in other industries around Adelaide, in the council, farmers markets and those involved in projects to save and produce food efficiently. This surprised me when just grasping the number of projects and events underway to help save those in rough lifestyles and just simply our environment. Otherwise, I had simple tasks of organising and booking clients into the computer and learnt how to use these new programs with ease. This work placement allowed me to grasp just a small part of social work and community service and definitely allowed me to gain some perspective on how fortunate I am and whether it was a suitable workplace for me in the future." Ebony, Year 10

Rocky at Nunyara, Uniting Venues SA

"I went to Nunyara Conference Centre in Belair and worked with Uniting Venues SA doing Outdoor Ed with school camps and leading activities with the kids. It let me experience what that type of work atmosphere is like and whether I would want to go into this working area after school. It was interesting to see how the world runs out of school. If I had the chance I would, do it again." Rocky, Year 10

Sophie at Bains Road Preschool
Joel at Century 21
Samantha at Aberfoyle Park Preschool
Dakota at Harvest The Fleurieu

"I went to the Harvest The Fleurieu strawberry farm in Mount Compass. I helped out in the kitchen, cafe, and on the farm. I liked my Work Experience because I learnt many things like how to use a coffee machine and how to wrap products on the machine and workbench." Dakota, Year 10

"I went to MD Auto care and was a mechanic for the week. I serviced cars and did some general part installs. I really enjoyed the week and learnt a lot. I learnt how to operate certain machines and tools. I really enjoyed it and will definitely consider it as a career in the future." Luke, Year 10

"From 23- 27 August, the Year 10s went on Work Experience. I went to Drakes supermarkets in Seaford because my previously arranged Work Experience at a school was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Over the week, I completed many tasks such as stacking shelves, serving customers, filing cabinets in the deli and cleaning. I enjoyed my work experience at Drakes because I learned a lot about cleaning and serving, which has been beneficial for me." Scott, Year 10
