Fifth Grade HIV/AIDS Materials Review

Washington State Law (RCW 28A.230.070) currently requires each district to annually instruct all fifth-twelfth grade students in HIV/AIDS education. In fifth grade, this content is provided by the classroom teacher, and for this year will be provided during the month of June. If you would like to preview the materials being used for HIV/AIDs and for Human Growth and Development, you may access the videos and materials at the following link:

5th Grade HIV/AIDS + Human Growth and Development Materials Preview

Washington State Law also requires that parents/guardians must preview the instructional materials before the district can excuse a student from HIV/AIDS instruction. After viewing the materials, you may choose to excuse your child from the HIV/AIDS and/or the Human Growth and Development lessons by filling out the electronic form at the link below. The form to opt out your child must be completed and submitted by Thursday, May 20:

If you need interpretation of the videos, please contact Tina Leger at legertm@mukilteo.wednet.edu or 425-356-1202.

Moving or Transferring Schools?

With the end of the year fast approaching, Mukilteo Elementary would like to know if you will NOT be returning to our school for the 2019 – 2020 school year.

If you have a 5th grade student, they will be automatically enrolled into their next school. If you have a student currently attending ME and they WILL be returning next year, you do not need to do anything.

If you will be moving this summer, or your student will not be returning to ME for another reason, please fill out form below.

THANK YOU!

Ella's Plastic Pick-Up Challenge (PPC)
5th grader Ella wanted to do something about the plastic pollution problem she's noticed. She is inviting kids to pick up plastic, let us know how many pieces they pick up, and then dispose of the plastic responsibly.

Students of Mukilteo Elementary can participate in the PPC from April 12 - June 14. Kids who will participate will try to reach the goal of 21,670 pieces of plastic picked up from their neighborhood or around Mukilteo. Classrooms will collect the number of plastic each student picked up every Monday and add it to the google sheet they have received.

Safety Rules for the PPC:

  • Remember to put on gloves*
  • Wear a mask while picking up trash
  • Wash your hand after you pick up litter
  • Be sure not to destroy any plants
  • Use paper bags to carry the trash you have picked up
  • Remember to ask an adult for permission and assistance

And remember, every piece of plastic counts!

*A biodegradable glove came home from school in the supply bag for students to use when picking up plastic. You can also think about using washable winter gloves!

Be sure to send your teachers pictures of you picking up plastic to showcase in the Falcon Spirit!
Keep Up with What's Happening!

Our regular weekly work party in the garden is every WEDNESDAY, from 1-4 PM. If you would like to join us click here. We will need help watering and weeding now that the days are longer and warmer.

Thank you to Mr. Sackett for donating strawberry starts from his own personal garden! We can look forward to tending to them while they grow and enjoying the berries when they have become established.

The garden team very much looks forward to projects in the works with local Girl Scout troops. The current project is installing a composting area so we can begin recycling garden waste and creating our own soil.

Finally, thanks to Kash Wilson and family, once more, for trimming our fava beans and adding beautiful, and quite practical, flowers to the garden.

If you haven't stopped by the garden, please do! Enjoy this lovely space on our campus.

Meanwhile, the team is working to make the garden a learning space during the school day where classes can take their activities outdoors. Contact Mr. Greer for more information.

STAY CONNECTED TO M.E.!

A FREE Fund Run t-shirt went home with your student along with information about the upcoming ME PTSA Virtual Fund Run Fundraiser. A copy of the form is attached here as well. Students may wear their shirts anytime between now and the event, but we’d love to encourage the kids to wear their shirts on Monday, May 17th, which is the first official day of the virtual event (theme for that day = Mukilteo Elementary Monday: wear teal or your SOAR gear).

The event will run through Friday, May 21st and kids can participate in any or all of the daily themes that fit your schedule. They are encouraged to get “sponsors” (AKA close friends and family) to donate money to our school on behalf of their hard work running, walking, biking, etc. The donation website is up and running now through the end of May as an easy way for people to donate funds or checks can be made payable to ME PTSA and sent to school in a clearly marked envelope with your student or dropped off in the office. We hope this will be a fun way to both get kids up and moving AND earn money for the ME PTSA, which funds many fun and amazing programs at our school. Thanks in advance for your support!!!

Mukilteo Community News

The Mukilteo School District acknowledges that we are gathered on Indigenous Lands, the traditional territory of the Coast Salish People, specifically the Tulalip Tribes, successors in interest to the Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skykomish, and other allied bands signatory to the 1855 Treaty to Point Elliott. The district serves a diverse population of about 15,000 students who live near the Puget Sound about 15 miles north of Seattle, Washington. Our mission is to help prepare our community's children to be successful, contributing members of the community. Our students learn in an environment that is positive, caring, and focused on their highest academic potential. And, it's working. Mukilteo students consistently score well in annual achievement tests and win academic honors. Many people have moved to the area because of the first-rate Mukilteo school system.

Mukilteo School District does not discriminate in any programs or activities on the basis of sex, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, age, veteran or military status, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, disability, or the use of trained dog guide or service animal and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups.
