Boeing South Bridge Cedar River Modifications KPFF Consulting engineers

KPFF Special Projects mechanical group was awarded the opportunity to work with The Boeing Company on the Cedar River South Bridge located at the Renton facility. The purpose of this bridge is to provide access across the Cedar River from the Boeing manufacturing facility to the Renton airport, where the completed 737’s undergo flight preparations. To prevent disruptions to Boeing due to damages, the bridge has the capability of being raised above flooding water and debris during river flooding conditions. This is accomplished only hours prior to imminent flooding utilizing four vertically mounted hydraulic lift cylinders, which are installed by Boeing facilities personnel utilizing a dedicated crane truck.

The scope of work for KPFF was to analyze the existing conditions of the bridge, provide design modifications to mechanical and hydraulic components optimizing bridge raising and lowering operations, supply a drawing package respectively and provide onsite construction support. To date KPFF has completed all project design tasks and expect to begin construction support with Boeing and the awarded mechanical and hydraulic contractors in the spring of 2017.
