Parents as Teachers enjoyed a "swap shop" this morning. Families were able to come and exchange things they no longer wanted and shop for "new" treasures. What a fun morning!

Mr. Hartman of the Muscatine Fire Department spoke about fire safety with both Kindergarten classes at Colorado this week. Pictured below are students from Mrs. Hines' kindergarten class.

Franklin 2nd graders in Mrs. Henderson's class enjoy partner reading.

Students in Mrs. Hepker's class learn about communication and teamwork as they turn their classmate into a mummy!

Mrs. Hepker and a student are T”winning” while supporting a fellow Franklin student receiving last treatment!

Students in Mrs. Brewer's Begindergarten Class and Mrs. Hull's Preschool Class enjoyed the morning at the Red Barn Pumpkin Farm!

Jefferson Kindergarteners in Ms. Nebergall's class took a trip to the Musser Public Library and the Muscatine Fire Station last Friday.

Mrs. Manjoine's 5th grade science classes learned about the night sky and constellations while in the Star Lab. Mrs. Chavarria led the lessons and read some Greek mythology to the classes.

Third, fourth and fifth graders at Madison School took part in a book tasting of the 2018-19 Iowa Children's Choice Award Books. Students 'sampled' from the twenty books and also had an opportunity to watch book trailers. They then rated them as a 'Must Read,' a 'Maybe,' or 'Not for Me.' Students had the chance to talk to each other about the great books they 'tasted.' Click below for a link to the ICCA book trailers;

Mrs. Holder’s Art Club at Madison designed and carved pumpkins this week after school.

Mrs. Poppe’s Pre-Ap 5th grade math class created an interactive number line to help them learn about integers. They also spent time working on the 9’s in CountFast Math this week.

Students and staff at McKinley find that yoga helps them throughout their day! Below is yoga instructor, Alison Phelps with a McKinley student practicing tree pose.

Students in Mrs. Johnson's class at McKinley decorated pumpkins 🎃 and practiced their social skills of being kind and sharing the dinosaurs 🦖 with friends. 😃

Mrs. Stange's First Grade class at McKinley Elementary celebrated "Franken-Friday" today! They ate "Franken-pudding" and recorded their observations using their five senses. What smart scientists! They also created their own versions of Frankenstein and wrote stories about what they would do if they met him!

Students in Mrs. Evans' preschool class has been studying trees. We learned that some trees need to be cared for in different ways. One of the dads from our class has a tree service and taught us even more about trees!

First graders in Mrs. Mergen's class celebrated reaching their goal of reading 4,500 minutes with a Read and Feed by flashlights!

Mrs. Vogeler's first grade class excitedly welcomed their classmate, Lucy, and her sister, Leah to school on Wednesday. Lucy was the lucky winner of a coloring contest and her prize was a ride to school on a firetruck! Thanks to the generosity of the Muscatine Fire Department, the students each received a coloring book, and they were even able to walk through the firetruck! Way to go, Lucy, and thank you MFD!

Second graders at Mulberry Elementary collaborated to put words in alphabetical order. First they had to put four groups of words in order. Then they were challenged to put all 16 cards in order, some with the same beginning letter. Students had great discussions about which words came first and why. As groups, they uncovered the strategy of looking to the second or third letter to determine which word came first.

In Mr. Bartell's Flight and Space classes, students constructed kites and air foils while discussing for lift assists in flight.

Muskie Spirit Jewelry Designs will be making it debut during Parent/Teacher conferences next week. Twenty four girls at CMS have been learning the art of bead design during MTSS time. Beaded bracelets and spirit necklaces are available for $5.00 a piece. The money collected will be used to create "Little Muskie Care Packages" for kids who enter into our local ER. Stop by and see our display!

Newcomer students in Ms. Acker's EL classes got to witness their first snow EVER!

The sixth grade at Central Middle School recently extended the learning for all students by visiting a variety of downtown Muscatine locations in conjunction with our BizTown Unit. The goal of the visits was for students to experience how a real town functions and all of the needed elements for a successful town. Thank you to the following locations for hosting our students: City Hall/Mayor Broderson, MuscaBus drivers, MCSA, First National Bank, Musser Public Library, History and Industry Center, and the Police Station.

Central 6th grade students visited BizTown in Davenport last Thursday and Friday. By running our own businesses and interacting with other ones, we learned how each individual citizen impacts the economy and that we had to work together for our business and town to be successful.

Ms. Dryg, Mrs. Ruckles, and Mrs. Kinsey's ELA classes completed a review activity in which students were able to answer review questions and once they had the question correct, they had an opportunity to earn extra points for their team by tossing their answer into a basket. Students did a great job of working together to find correct answers and cheering each other on to make their baskets.

Mrs. Ortega's class joined a 50 states postcard exchange and is now anxiously waiting to receive postcards! Students mailed their Iowa postcards out this week!

Students in Mr. Yerington’s 6th grade science classes are learning about physical and chemical properties such as density, solubility, and flammability by participating in three learning stations!

MHS academy students gave back to the community by carving pumpkins for the Halloween Hike at Discovery Park on Friday, October 12th and performed landscaping at Sunset Housing this morning as part of giving back to the community.

MHS Key Clubbers participated in Highway Clean-up this week (not all students who participated are pictured). Including Highway Clean-up, Key Club members have already completed over 100 volunteer hours this school year!

Students in Mr. Hennes' and Mrs. Clark's physics classes completed an acceleration lab and used posters and peer editing to communicate scientific information.
