Virginia was considered part of the southern colonies. Virginia has mountains, valleys, and coastal plains.

Since it was part of the southern colonies it had a warm climate which made it easy for disease to spread unlike in the northern colonies.

The warm climate and very fertile soil of the south made growing crops easy for the colonist of the Virginia colony.

For most of the 1600's, white indentured servants worked the colony's tobacco fields, but by 1705 the Virginia colony had become a slave society.

Nearly all power was in the hands of white male landowners, who ran the government and, by law, belonged to the Church of England.

Women who married and worked at home were considered "good wives"; those who refused such "proper" roles were considered troublesome.
