Cochrane Public School News February 2017

Gr. 7/8 Technology Class

Grade 7 and 8 students wrapped up their woodworking class by testing out their bridges and boats. The students had a great time learning how to use the woodworking equipment and creating several projects with the help of Mr. Lawrence.

Gr. 8 Outdoor Education

Mr. Henderson's Gr. 8 class took their learning outdoors and built Quinzhees which are shelters that are made by gathering a large pile of snow and then hollowing it out. Not only was it a fantastic learning opportunity but it was a great community-building experience for the class!

Bell Let's Talk Day

On January 23rd, our Gr. 7 and 8 students opened the conversation about Mental Health by participating in various activities. One of the things that they did was complete speech frames in which they wrote supportive messages about mental health. These messages are displayed in our school cafeteria. Kaeden Savoie, a Gr. 7 student in Mme. Belisle's class, was inspired to create a video in which he shared his story about his own personal mental health journey. We are very proud of Kaeden's willingness to share and hope that his positive and hopeful message will help other students who share similar struggles.

Kaeden's video has been viewed over 13,000 times and counting! Great job Kaeden and we are very proud of you!

Games in Kindergarten

Mme. Demers and Mme. Charron's ELKP class have been developing numeracy skills by playing familiar games. Board games not only reinforce counting, one to one correspondence and other math concepts but also help students understand turn-taking and fair play.

Using pattern blocks is also a favourite activity!

Our Eco-Exploration class had many adventures in December and January! Here are some Eco day pictures from the past couple of months. Here are some of the highlights!

One project the students found very exciting was to build a shelter. The exciting part of this adventure was that Mr. Martin agreed to sleep for a night in this shelter and report on how well the design and construction worked in reality! And - he did!

Along with the Gr. 7/8 students, the Eco-Explorations class turned the forest into a playground!

Concocting the plan!
Where's the snow? January weather was awesome!

The class had a unique idea! They decided to build snowmen in various yards in exchange for donations to the Cochrane Food Bank.

They built a snowman at Nishnawbe-Aski Police Services headquarters.

Another snowman was built a the CIBC bank.

Local residents also had snowmen built on their properties!

Mental Health

Our Child and Youth Worker, Lana Kershaw, recently put together a bulletin board that provides information for parents about different aspects about Mental Health and Mental Health programming at ESCHS and CPS. The student pictures were from our Gr. 1 class at Cochrane Public and depicted students' quiet places.

Take an info sheet!

Book Picnic, 2017

Our 2nd annual Family Literacy Book Picnic was a great success! Thank you to all of our families who were able to make it into the school to read a few books with your child! If you weren't able to make it, we matched older students with younger ones so that everyone could participate!
