Martin Luther King

he was born in Atlanta in 1929


Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s.He led non-violent protests to fight for the rights of all people including African Americans.He hoped that America and the world could became a colorblind society where race would not impact a person's civil rights.He is considered one of the great orators of modern times, and his speeches still inspire many to this day


Martin went to booker high school.He was a brillant student he got a degree in sociology and a degree theology.His dad was a preacher who inspired Martin to pursue the ministry. He had a younger brother and a older sister.In 1953 he married Coretta Scott .They had four children :Yolanda, Martin, Dexter and Bernice

In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama

he was arrested in 1956

In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership

he led a march on Washington


An African American woman ,Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man.As a result she was arrested and spent the night in jail.This fact inspired Martin to start a boycott of the public transportation sistem in Mongomery.The boycott lasted over a year.Tension arose at times and Martin had to face very difficult and dangerous moments.How ever Martin was able to achieve his first civil rights result since segregation on the Monthgomery.

In his speech he said:


In 1963 Martin helped to organise the famous march on Washington.More than 250.000 people attended the march .The most important purposes on the march were:end of segregaition in public schools, protection from police abuse and laws to prevent discrimination in employment. It was during this march that Martin gave his “I HAVE A DREAM” speech .The march on Washington was a great success, infact the civil wright act was passed a year later in 1964.

Martin was assassinated on April 4 1968 in Manphist TN i was shoot by James Earl Rayon the balcony of his hotel.


-Martin was the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964

-MLK Day is a national holiday

-One of his main influences was Gandhi who taught people to protest in a non-violent manner
