Thesis: Paul Coelho's The Alchemist, demonstrates the bond between mentor and pupil along with Tom Schulman's Dead Poets Society, Walt Whitman's O Captain ! My Captain !, and Harper Lee's To Kill Mockingbird with events shaping people based on influences.

Commentary: In The Alchemist the main character Santiago, faces the counselor about his vision even when a member of the counselor challenged, his vision but he still stayed truthful against the member.

Oasis

Detail: "I can only tell you what I saw. If you don't want to believe me, you don't have to do anything about it. "The men fell into an animated discussion. They spoke in an Arabic dialect that the boy didn't understand, but, when he made to leave, the guard told him to stay." (Coelho 109).

Commentary: Similarly Dead Poets Society shows Tom Anderson standing up for his believes after he signs a letter attesting to the false truth of allegations against Mr. Keating by rising up on his desk and saying his farewell against another teacher who threatens to expel him for doing so.

Detail: "Mr. Keating, they made everyone sign it..."

"Quiet, Mr. Anderson!"

"You gotta believe me"

"I do believe you, Todd"

"Sit down, Mr. Anderson. One more outburst from you or anyone else and your out of this school"

"Leave Mr. Keating, I said: leave Mr. Keating."

"Captain, My Captain!"

Explanation: Tom Anderson and Santiago are boys transitioning to men by making choices that change them while engaging with teachers who object to their decisions.

Commentary: Santiago in his journey must bid farewell to his spiritual adviser to continue his personal legend after he had enlightened him on the Language of the World.

Detail: "From here on, you will be alone you are only three hours from the Pyramids."

"Thank you, you taught me the Language of the World."

"I only invoked what you already knew." (Coelho 158).

Commentary: Correspondingly Walt Whitman's "O Captain ! My Captain !", displays a farewell to his teacher describing his personal legend and the peoples reaction to it.

Detail: "O Captain ! My Captain ! Our fearful is done ;

The ship was weather'd every rack, the price we sought is won ;

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,

While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring :

But O heart ! heart ! heart !

O the bleeding drops of red,

Where on the deck my captain lies,

Fallen cold and dead !"(Whitman 1-8)

Walt Whitman's "O Captain ! My Captain !"

Explanation: In the stories people are expressing gratitude for the actions of the mentors which effect them, and their pupils, while knowing they must not continue with them on their students journeys.

Commentary: In The Alchemist Santiago had to control his fear once he was told that he would die if he did not turn himself into wind but with the alchemist's encouraging advice he learned how to do so and the Language of the World.

Detail: "Remember what I told you: the world is only the visible aspect of God. And that alchemy does is to spiritual perfection into contact with the material plane." (Coelho 146).

Commentary: To Kill a Mockingbird shares the same principal of encouraging and enlightenment with Scout asking Atticus was there a reason he took Tom Robinson's trail.

Detail: "For a number of reasons, the main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again."

Explanation: The alchemist and Atticus represent mentors helping the innocents Scout and Santiago understand the events around them in order to guide them so they can continue on their journeys.

Conclusion: By looking at these writings, we can see how each shares aspects on teacher-pupil relationships and enlightenment, understanding, and endurance in the face of opposition, while stating the way events shape an individual.
