Learning Styles & Multiple Intelligence Which one works for you?

People learn in different ways.

Simply put the different learning styles are visual, auditory, verbal, physical, logical, social and solitary.

Most people have a preferred way to learn and most people will have a combination of the different learning styles.

One common misconception about multiple intelligence's is that it means the same thing as learning styles. Instead, multiple intelligences represent the different intellectual abilities. Whereas the learning styles, are the ways in which an individual approaches a range of tasks.

So depending on you intelligence's this determines the way in which you learn best.

Based on psychologist Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence's we can look at the learning styles in more detail.

The different multiple intelligence's

• Linguistic intelligence (word smart)

• Logical intelligence (number smart)

• Spatial intelligence (picture smart)

• Musical intelligence (audio smart)

• Kinesthetic intelligence (body smart)

• Interpersonal intelligence (people smart)

• Intrapersonal intelligence (“self smart”)

• Naturalist intelligence (nature smart)


The individual has the ability to understand spoken and written language as well as the ability to speak and write themselves.

Linguistic or word smart intelligence refers to the ability to analyse information and produce work that involves oral and written language, such as speeches, books and emails.


The individual has the ablilty to understand complex and abstract ideas.

Logical or number smart intelligence is the ability to investigate and identify relationships between different things.


The individual has the ability to comprehend graphical information, such as maps and graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly.

Spatial or picture smart intelligence is the ability to visualise with the minds eye. graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly


The individual has the ability to enables us to recognise, create, reproduce, and reflect on music and different types of sound.

Musical or audio smart intelligence is the capacity to discern pitch, rhythm, timbre, and tone.


People with Kinesthetic intelligence enjoy building things and figuring out how things work. They have excellent motor skills and coordination. They are very physical and are keenly aware of their bodies.

Kinesthetic or bodily intelligence is the ability to learn through movement and experimentation.


The individual has the ability to recognise and understand other people's moods, desires, motivations, and intentions.

People with interpersonal or people smart intelligence thrive with social interaction.


The word intrapersonal means “within the self”so, “intrapersonal intelligence” is another term for self-awareness. Individuals have the ability to recognise and assess the same characteristics as interpersonal individuals within themselves.

People who have high intrapersonal or self smart intelligence are aware of their emotions, motivations, beliefs and goals.


Individuals have the ability to identity ans distinguish between things found in the natural world and that how sensitive an individual is to nature and the world.

Naturalistic intelligence refers to the ability to identify and distinguish among different types of plants, animals, and weather formations.
