Daniel Ortega served as president in Nicaragua from 1984 to 1990 and again from 2007. He focused on improving general economic conditions, particularly from poorer Nicaraguans. The Government worked on social programs that helped reduce poverty. He largely upheld the free-market.

- Revolution- Lifted the constitutional ban on consecutive reelections of the president. That allowed him to run a second time.
