Our Reading Incentives Mapplewell Primary school

At Mapplewell Primary School we believe reading is an essential life skill. Reading is an exciting and rewarding activity and is much more than the decoding of marks on the page. It is a search for meaning, which requires the reader to be an active participant in the process.

Furthermore, research highlights that reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of future success. At Mapplewell Primary we want our pupils to have a love for reading. We firmly believe reading widely and often increases pupils’ vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech.

Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds. At Mapplewell Primary School we want to celebrate our pupil's reading journeys through a number of different rewards and prizes.

Reading Challenge

Research shows that pupils who read regularly are more likely to make better progress in school. The aim of our 'Reading Challenge' is to promote and encourage our pupils to read regularly both at school and at home. All pupils from Reception to Year 6 are asked to read at home at least four times a week, every week and that this is recorded on their Reading Challenge Bookmark. Once a full line is complete (the pupil has read four times) pupils hand their bookmark to their teacher for a chance to be in the draw to take home the 'Mystery Read' for that week. The 'Mystery Read' is a story that the winning pupil can take home for the week to share with someone in their family along with a tasty hot chocolate!

When pupils have completed the whole of their bookmark (read four times a week for four weeks) they will be given a reading token and be entered into a prize draw that will be drawn at the end of each half term. This prize will include items linked to the time of the year that the pupils can take home and keep e.g. Halloween treats, Christmas treats, Easter treats etc. The more a pupils reads, the more bookmarks they will fill and the ore chances they will have of winning prizes!

Each box should be dated and signed by parents/carers every time a pupil reads at home each week.

Pupils in Year 3 to Year 6 will have a virtual Reading Challenge Bookmark that can be assessed and completed through pupils class Seesaw accounts.

Scan class QR codes to access and complete Reading Challenge Bookmarks.

If parents/carers would prefer a paper copy of the Reading Challenge Bookmark or need any further help in accessing Seesaw, please speak to class teachers.

Reading Tokens and Badges

Reading Tokens are linked to our 'Reading Challenge' to further encourage our pupils to take part in the challenge by reading regularly at home. Every time a pupil completes a full Reading Challenge Bookmark they will also earn themselves 4 reading tokens. Our pupils need to collect reading tokens in order to earn a Reading Award Badge. Reading tokens can also be given out by teachers and other adults working in school for reading related achievements.
