At Mapplewell Primary School we believe reading is an essential life skill. Reading is an exciting and rewarding activity and is much more than the decoding of marks on the page. It is a search for meaning, which requires the reader to be an active participant in the process.
Furthermore, research highlights that reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of future success. At Mapplewell Primary we want our pupils to have a love for reading. We firmly believe reading widely and often increases pupils’ vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech.
Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds. At Mapplewell Primary School we want to celebrate our pupil's reading journeys through a number of different rewards and prizes.
Reading Challenge
Research shows that pupils who read regularly are more likely to make better progress in school. The aim of our 'Reading Challenge' is to promote and encourage our pupils to read regularly both at school and at home. All pupils from Reception to Year 6 are asked to read at home at least four times a week, every week and that this is recorded on their reading challenge bookmark, in their reading diary or on Seesaw. At the end of each week, children who have read at least 4 times a week will be entered into a prize draw where they have the chance of winning a 'lucky dip' reading prize!
Additionally, collective rewards and incentives are given to promote reading. When a child reads at home 4 times or more in a week, they will receive 1 token for their class.
At the end of each half term, the class with the most tokens in KS1 and KS2 will be rewarded with a celebratory movie and hot chocolate afternoon.
Rise and Shine reading is held each half term. This is where children have the opportunity to bring their parents/carers into their classroom and share a book with them for 15 minutes before the start of the day.
Alongside these rewards, we have other incentives throughout the year linked to special times such as Christmas and Easter.
Remember, that your child's reading can be recorded on Seesaw.
