Conflict Minerals and Manufacturing Reilly smith, period 1

My project is on conflict materials and working conditions of electronics. While this issue is rapidly improving, there are still many improvements that need to be made.

"Intel is creating a responsible supply chain to ensure minerals that finance violence don’t end up in the devices we use every day. We’re committed to using only Conflict Free mineral resources, which means greater economic opportunities and safety for miners and their families. Now through third-party audits and direct validations by Intel’s supply chain organization, we have gone beyond just microprocessors to ensure that our broader product base will be conflict free" - Intel

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.

"The Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., (also known by its trading name, Foxconn), has been accused of violating labour rights for many years. They keep their employees in overcrowded dormitories run by military-like security forces. People work excessive hours, often with no compensation for overtime, which the company claims is done voluntarily. Management controls every aspect of workers’ lives, interfering with their privacy. The concept of privacy is even an illusion, as up to 24 people share a room in huge blockhouses." - Facing Finance

exposure to dangerous chemicals

"THEY CALLED IT “banana oil.” Long Li didn't ask what was in it. All she knew was that she was supposed to use it to clean cell phone screens, hundreds of them every hour. Fumes filled the air in the windowless room where she worked, in a three-story factory outside the southeastern China city of Dongguan." - Wired

Conflict minerals

"Conflict minerals have fueled and continue to help sustain armed violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo), linking them to the deadliest conflict globally since World War II.The four conflict minerals (gold, along with the 3Ts - tin, tantalum, and tungsten) are not the only sources of income to armed groups, but they are some of the most lucrative. The illegal exploitation of natural resources today is a manifestation of the grand corruption linked to violence that has marked successive governments in Kinshasa and the broader region since colonial times." - Enough Project

How is my topic related to exodus?

Conflict materials and manufacturing are related to the story of The Exodus because for a long time, the big corporations would not let the people leave and would force them to work harder all the time.

Verses from Exodus

Exodus 5:1-2

1Afterwards, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Let my people go, that they may hold a feast* for me in the wilderness.” 2Pharaoh answered, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD,* and I will not let Israel go.”

how are these issues improving?

Short answer: Yes. As stated before, major corporations such as Intel are switching to conflict free mining and manufacturing. In July 2016, Intel sent several YouTube channels 'mystery boxes' that included all the [previously conflict] materials used to make a desktop processor and ways that they were making a change. Other companies such as Apple have created plans with the companies that manufacture their products to create safer working environments for their employees.
