Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe as a act of silent protest through words. She expressed part of her life, as she wrote the book, that would move the entire nation.

1854 Bleeding Kansas

Violence erupted in Kansas after the decision that they would let popular sovereignty decide whether or not Kansas would become a free state. Opposite sides soon started to raid and kill each other.

1856-7 Dred Scott v. Sanford

There was a case brought up by Dred Scott against Elizabeth Sanford, Mrs.Sanford's husband purchased Scottt and later died and left him with his wife and children. Mr.Scott later sued Mrs.Sanford and the court ruled that no person ,if of African American descent , could legally be free.

1860 Lincoln's Election

Lincoln was controversially elected as president in 1860. He wanted the slave states left alone and pro slavery supporters got mad. Of course, anger leads to instability...
