NL In de kunst wordt vaak verteld wat wel en niet kan. Bezoekers van galeries gedragen zich naar ongeschreven regels en kunstenaars volgen normen geleerd op hun kunstopleidingen. Kunstenaars Joran van Soest (1994) en Matt Chaim de Groot (1969) laten in de expositie ‘The Observer Effect’ zien dat het anders kan. Door gebruik van zelf ontwikkelde technieken en combinaties van veel verschillende media treden zij buiten de gebaande paden. Het resultaat is een verzameling van dromerige beelden waarvan moeilijk te achterhalen is waar het nou eigenlijk van is gemaakt.
Samen met GoMulan Gallery maakt Joran onderdeel uit van het Special Editions Program van het Amsterdam Art Gallery Weekend van 29 - 25 november 2020. De topgaleries van Amsterdam laten hierbij door een van hun kunstenaars een gelimiteerd oplage maken van een nieuw betaalbaar kunstwerk dat gedurende dit weekend te koop zal zijn. Joran creëerde speciaal hiervoor het kunstwerk ‘They had the world, carrying it on their shoulders,’ dat vanaf 6 november al te zien is in GoMulan Gallery.
ENG In the artworld is often told what can and cannot be done. Visitors of galleries behave according to unwritten rules and artists follow standards learned at their art schools. Artists Joran van Soest (1994) and Matt Chaim de Groot (1969) show in the exhibition 'The Observer Effect' that things can be done differently. By using self-developed techniques and combinations of many different media they go off the beaten track. The result is a collection of dreamy images of which it is difficult to find out what it is actually made of.
Together with GoMulan Gallery Joran is part of the Special Editions Program of the Amsterdam Art Gallery Weekend from 25 - 29 November 2020. The top galleries of Amsterdam will have one of their artists make a limited edition of a new affordable artwork that will be for sale during this weekend. Joran created the artwork 'They had the world, carrying it on their shoulders,' which will be on display at GoMulan Gallery from 6 November.
NL Joran van Soest (1994) toont in zijn werk de dualiteit van het bestaan: wie ben jij in relatie tot een ander. Door het vermengen van diverse kunsttechnieken creëert hij collages en sculpturen. Hierin zijn onder meer zeppelins, mensfiguren en menselijk verlangen verwerkt. Joran van Soest studeerde twee jaar geleden af aan de kunstacademie AKV St. Joost in Den Bosch en was begin dit jaar al te zien met een eigen overzichtstentoonstelling in het Noordbrabants Museum.
ENG Joran van Soest (1994) shows in his work the duality of existence: who are you in relation to another. By mixing various art techniques he creates collages and sculptures. These include zeppelins, human figures and human desire. Joran van Soest graduated two years ago from the art academy AKV St. Joost in Den Bosch and early this year he had his own retrospective exhibition in the North Brabant Museum.
NL Matt Chaim de Groot (1969) werkt met foto’s die hij smelt in Epoxy. Door verschillende foto’s achter elkaar te bevestigen creëert hij diepte. Matt: Tijdens het maakproces gaat er geregeld wat in de fik. Het is leuk om daarna in de galerie te horen waarom het resultaat wel of niet goed gelukt is.’ Zijn onconventionele technieken doceert hij aan de Fotoacademie in Amsterdam. De taferelen te zien op de foto’s gaan vrijwel altijd over het land waar hij is opgegroeid, Israël. Tijdens zijn dienstplicht reisde hij veelvuldig naar de frontlinie op de Golanhoogte waar de grens met Syrië ligt. Hier kennen beide landen al sinds 1973 een staakt het vuren dat alleen nog maar op papier blijkt te staan. Een land in eeuwig conflict en waar je je toch thuis voelt.
ENG Matt Chaim de Groot (1969) works with photos he melts in Epoxy. By attaching several pictures in a row he creates depth. Matt: During the making process some things go up in flames. It's nice to hear afterwards in the gallery why the result has or hasn't worked out well'. He teaches his unconventional techniques at the Photo Academy in Amsterdam. The scenes in the photographs are almost always about the country where he grew up, Israel. During his military service he frequently travelled to the front line on the Golan Heights, where the border with Syria lies. Here both countries have had a ceasefire since 1973 that only appears on paper. A country in perpetual conflict and where you still feel at home.
