THE WOMAN IN THIS POEM Bronwen wallace

Story behind this poem

This poem definitely has a story behind it. It is about a women who is married with children that is having an affair and thinks about leaving her husband and family for her lover. She is conflicted because nothing she ever does makes her happy. If she leaves her suburban life, she will miss her life and her kids but if she stays, she will always be thinking about her lover. She is a very confused woman in which you hate. Throughout the poem you don't understand her and you think she's cruel for wanting to leave her children.

Theme: Motherhood

A great theme in this poem is motherhood and how mothers give their all to their children, husbands, and everything but themselves. There is something very selfless about being a mother considering that they do so much for everyone else that they forget to treat themselves. It is so much work, it is unpaid, and it is often very unappreciated. In this poem, she is really struggling with being a perfect mother and taking her kids to baseball and dance classes, making supper, being perfect. She feels lonely but at the same time, she loves her children.

Theme: Marriage

The idea of marriage is almost depressing in this poem. Usually, marriage would be thinking about someone you love and want to spend the rest of your life and this poem, doesn't capture that feel of marriage. The woman in this poem is married to an amazing man, I know that he is amazing because she talks about how much he would miss her and how she thinks about her husband coming home to kiss the back of her neck. This sounds like a very nice husband that a woman should love being with but the woman in this poem doesn't. She is not happy with him and she never explains why and that could be because she doesn't know why. Whenever we are faced with being unhappy sometimes, we don't necessarily know why.

Theme: Loving Someone You Can't Be With

The woman in this poem is in love with a man that she is having an affair with. She must feel some sort of loss when she feels like she can't be with him. There is always something so painful about loving someone you can't be with. In this poem, the focus is on her husband, kids and her suburban life. My thought is, what about the lover? The man she truly loves that she can't be with because of everything going on in her life and her lover must feel that sadness too. It's tragic that no one sees this love story taking place in the poem.

Theme: Reflection of Ourselves

After hating this woman and everything she is feeling, it compares you to her. Yes, she is thinking about something we don't like and she isn't our favourite person but she is human. She has bad thoughts and make mistakes just the same as everyone does everyday. There has been many times where I have thought about something bad that would change my entire life because I was unhappy with it in the moment. The woman in this poem is human and she is just the same as everyone else.
