Based on the context clues, the word "plodding" means slow and lazy.

Based upon the context clues, the word "abolitionists" means people who were standing up to fight slavery.

"Refusing to be discouraged, Lincoln challenged Douglas for his seat in the Senate. The Illinois Republicans nominated him unanimously." (Pg. 40)

Based on the context clues below, the word "unanimously" means in complete agreement and acting together as one.

"Douglass believed in freedom and equality for all people, including women. He did not always support Lincoln. He believed Lincoln was much too cautious about ending slavery. After the Emancipation Proclamation, Douglass began to think better of the president." (Pg. 52)

Based upon the context clues, the word "emancipation" means freeing someone from control of another person.

Based on the context clues above, the word "inaugural" mean a ceremony speech inducting someone into a new position.

"Robert had a long career as s lawyer and diplomat." (Pg. 95)

Based on the context clues, the word "diplomat" means an official engaged in international negotiations.
