Fishtown is located immediately north of Northern Liberties, its borders are somewhat disputed today due to many factors, but are roughly defined by the triangle created by the Delaware River, Frankford Avenue, and York Street.
Some newer residents expand the area to Lehigh Avenue, while some older residents shrink the area to Norris Street. It is served by the Market–Frankford Line rapid transit subway/elevated system.
The name “Fishtown” is derived from the area’s former role as the center of the shad fishing industry on the Delaware River. An influx of artists and professionals has joined the ranks of the neighborhood’s working class long-time residents. Fishtown is dotted with eclectic restaurants, gastropubs, corner bars an urban garden co-op and Philadelphia’s only casino. Enjoy a coffee at La Colombe or Reanimator, lunch at the Memphis Tap Room and drinks at Johnny Brenda’s, Barcade or Stephen Starr’s Frankford Hall. Take part in Fishtown’s special events like the Kinetic Sculpture Derby, Trenton Avenue Arts Festival or First Friday gallery openings.
Fishtown’s housing stock is comprised mainly two and three story rowhomes but is fast becoming an area for green, sustainable modern architecture.

TALKED ABOUT EATS
Voted as the "Best New Restaurant of 2018" by Philadelphia Magazine, Suraya is a specialty, all-day market and café, restaurant and outdoor garden located in the bustling Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Created by Nathalie Richan and Roland Kassis of Café La Maude and Greg Root and Nick Kennedy of R&D, Suraya is named after the beloved grandmother of Nathalie and Roland, who raised both siblings in Beirut, Lebanon. As we say in Arabic, "Yalla, Sahtein!" or "Come and enjoy your meal!" with us here at Suraya.
Ever since Beddia 1.0 on Girard closed last year to “reinvent itself,” everyone from your landlord to the mayor has been waiting for the second coming. It’s finally arrived in a Fishtown alley with a little green neon sign out front, and it’s much bigger than it used to be, with three high-ceilinged rooms painted all white and filled with minimal light-wood furniture. And also, it has more than just pizza. Besides a few different pies (which, yes, are just as good as they’ve always been), there’s a long natural wine list, a few starters, and a daily selection of soft serve that you can - and should - take to-go, even if you’re not staying for a full meal.
"The overall vibe is open (literally, as you can see the kitchen through large glass windows) and busy since it just opened. Even though they were busy, the service was on point and the pizza was delivered by Joe Beddia himself. The pizza itself is perfectly thin, not too thin, and has different mixtures of gourmet toppings that you don’t find at your standard pizza shop" - Sheena Marziano Ball (Realtor + Pizza connoisseur)
Watch Joe make his famous pie in his first restaurant in Fishtown!

TALKED ABOUT DRINKS
Set in an industrial structure in the heart of Philadelphia’s Fishtown, Frankford Hall nails the perfect balance between edge and charm. Complete with massive garage doors and trees strung with twinkling lights, the space spreads out the action between spacious open-air picnic tables, fire pits and indoor bar area with ping-pong and shuffleboard. German and American beers flow by the half and full liter, joining two-fisted eats like sausages, burgers and warm Bavarian pretzels. Ideal for an impromptu drop-in with a few friends or an all-day session with a huge group, Frankford Hall embodies true Teutonic spirit-raising with a modern twist.
This friendly hangout features a variety of beers on tap, plus music events & a menu of pub grub. It's a great local bar with some Philly grit. As they like to put it, 'nough said.
At Philadelphia Distilling, our team combines age-old craftsmanship with evolving modern techniques to create a unique portfolio of premium spirits that rely on the agricultural integrity of authentically sourced botanicals and the finest heritage equipment. Hand-hammered copper stills from the fifth-generation Forsyth family and wooden fermentation vessels from Hall-Woodford, an iconic Philadelphia-based family business using the building technique since 1854, are a key point of difference for us—both in their construction value as well as the integrity of spirits they help us to produce. After celebrating our first decade by moving into a new showcase distillery, we continue our batch-by-batch process, turning out spirits that celebrate big, bold American flavor.
Philadelphia Brewing Company
Just steps from Fishtown, this Kensington Brewery has made it their mission to not only brew great beer, but offer more to their surrounding community. The history behind the well-known company stems from it's construction over 125 years ago. When you step inside you will feel the difference before you get the chance to taste the difference. It was built by the Weisbrod & Hess Oriental Brewing Company in 1885 and designed by brewery architect A.C. Wagner. This beautifully designed 19th Century facility sets the standard in Philadelphia for the ultimate in recycling and reuse. Since acquiring the massive 38,000 square foot brewery in 2001, they have set out not only to carefully renovate this forgotten gem but also to revitalize the industrial neighborhood of Kensington.
Rowhouse Spirits Distillery
Rowhouse Spirits is a tiny artisan distillery licensed in Pennsylvania as a Limited Distillery – which means we can sell direct to retail consumers as well as to licensed bars and restaurants within the state of Pennsylvania. Rowhouse Spirits produces very small batch Gin and other herbal spirits and will be setting aside malt, corn, and rye based spirits in barrels to make whiskey that will be offered at a later date.
