PROJECT COMPLETION

CANVAS TEMPE LEASING OFFICE

h/d recently completed a renovation of the Canvas Tempe Apartments Leasing Office, located on Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe. The 1,800 SF retail space creates an early-leasing office for Canvas, and provides students a sneak peek of the look and feel of the apartments currently under construction. The h/d Service Team worked through an aggressive six-week schedule to construct the desired aesthetic, with numerous artful finishes, on time. Finishes included wall coverings, laminated wood-wrapped marketing cubbies, carpeting inlaid in ceramic tile, transitioning to an LVT-floored kitchen and living room vignette that features cabinetry and finishes representative of a typical unit’s setup. The space is made complete by a feature peg-wall that showcases the essence of the brand in neon lights. Our h/d Service Group was proud to provide our client with this beautiful space to entice future residents to make Canvas their new home.

PROJECT UPDATES

CANVAS TEMPE STUDENT HOUSING

One of h/d's many projects near ASU's Tempe Campus, Canvas Tempe, has also reached a number of important milestones recently!

Keep scrolling for updates on the 826-bed community located at the corner of Terrace & Orange in Tempe.

The project is nearly finished with framing, and is anticipated to reach top-out in October.

The team has scaffolding up around nearly half of the project, with stucco work expected to begin very soon!

Structural steel for the leasing office, which will be one of the focal points for the entire project, is expected to arrive any day now, which will allow the project team to begin buildout of this area of the project.

The 7-story parking garage is moving along nicely and the team has started painting the twin tees concrete decks working their way down the structure.

The amenity deck on the seventh floor of the garage MEP rough-ins are almost complete and the team is gearing up for a slab pour. This will allow for amenity deck framing and pool work to begin. This is an important aspect of this project as students will spend most of their time (when not studying or in class) enjoying this space.

TOYOTA @ PARK PLACE

The Toyota @ Park Place project continues to make strides! Keep scrolling to see some of what the team in Chandler have been up to.

The team is in the final stages of finishing out the project and preparing for punch list.

The team has been busy installing new fixtures including a beautiful 50/50 door, installing the exterior window system and starting up HVAC units on the second floor.

h/d GIVES BACK ON FOUNDER'S DAY

h/d employee-owners took part in 2020 Founders Day activities that benefited a handful of local charities, including the United Food Bank, Operation School Bell, United Way and St. Mary's Food Bank. In total, and in partnership with Kitchell Corp., more than 440 volunteers combined to volunteer 1,380 total hours and donate over $34,000 to local charitable organizations! Now in its third-year, Founder’s Day is a day of remembrance and community service meant to honor Kitchell’s founder, Sam Kitchell, who passed away in 2006. The day of service is a way for Kitchell and h/d to reinforce their commitment to and tradition, started by Sam, of giving back to our local community.

Director of Service Group // GREG CAMPBELL

As a new leader with h/d, what are some of the things you would like folks to know about yourself?

“I am here to help support everyone and accomplish the goals we set together. I believe in giving back and bringing value to our business. I enjoy being part of a team that believes in each other and will not give up. I do my best to stay humble by being accountable. I love learning, teaching and make every effort to make the most of the right opportunities. I have learned we will overcome any obstacle, as long as we do not forget who is beside us.”

What were some of the things that drew you to h/d?

“The leadership, core values and teamwork drew me to h/d. The belief that we are all one work family. The opportunity to add value in superior constructability through self-performance of vital trades was also one of the big pulls for me to h/d, as was the prospect of building a new business unit that aligns with, and compliments, the existing successful business units.”

As an avid outdoorsman, where are some of your favorite spots to hang out, if you don’t mind sharing with the masses?

“A few of my favorite spots include Park - for weekend camping, Long Lake, Kinnikinick Lake, Black Canyon Lake for fishing or canoeing, the White Tank Mountains for day hikes, Diablo Canyon for scouting, and Big Boquillas Ranch, just to getaway. I truly enjoy any hunt units when I am fortunate to be drawn.”

As the leader of the Service Group, how does your group compliment the housing and commercial sides of h/d operations?

“We are a compliment through the experience that our teams provide in specialized licensed trades. Through our backlog where no job is ever 'too small'. We take a special operations approach where we complement all our other business units through service. We fill in the gaps for our housing and commercial groups. We ensure our clients have a one-stop contractor and they do not have to go anywhere else. We are able to collaborate and provide field support, quality self-performing trade teams, strategies and partners to win and build quality projects together."

You have extensive knowledge as not only a tradesman, but also having lived in Arizona for many years now. How has your background led you here, and how does your previous experience help you with the initiatives and goals of the h/d Service Group?

"I have been fortunate in my previous opportunities to work with industry-leading companies like h/d. My background and knowledge in contracting, MEP, prefabrication and off-site manufacturing are a good fit with the goals of the Service Group. My experience aligns with our initiatives in operations technology, self-perform work teams, improved constructability and effective unitized costs. Our resourcefulness targets our goal for improvement to our overall path to success."

The Service group is such a capable arm of h/d, tell us a little bit about the jobs your group completed recently, and what do you see as your main focus going forward?

"We successfully completed the Canvas Tempe leasing center, the Hines office remodel, the All Saints Church children’s hand wash station and the ARS loading dock rebuild. Our focus is on superior quality. We strive to provide dedicated and skilled specialty trades teams who are continually training. Our goal is to improve margins. We focus on enhanced productivity and scheduling, safety, extensive trade knowledge and internal alignment. This allows us to work through the ever-changing aspects of our projects where we provide cost of work savings. We offer an alternative for clients with small-scale TI’s, renovations, capital expenditures, remodels, repairs and expeditious new construction needs."

Can you speak to the development of the service group in terms of new qualifications and growth opportunities in the service sector?

"Our third-party work sector has allowed us to grow and provide service in the specialty trades to other contractors. With the help of our Civil group, who we collaborated with, we were awarded a sizeable plumbing project in Mesa. Our growth in these types of new construction opportunities is key to our development and will allow us to grow into pursuits of new construction projects with environmental controls, automated systems and even data centers. We obtained our CR-39 air conditioning and refrigeration license and our CR-37 plumbing license. These specialty license classifications are key to improving and diversifying our capabilities."
