Rio Bravo demonstrates authentic Mexican BY JAKE NAVARRO ’20

Everything around Westport is either pizza, burgers or italian but with Rio Bravo it adds a bit of a spicier taste. Rio Bravo is a locally owned mexican restaurant that serves authentic mexican food. Located at 1460 Post Rd Westport, Rio Bravo offers a wide variety of Mexican cuisine that is surprisingly really good.

While the restaurant seems squeezed between two other restaurants, it is a very large building split into a bar and table section. Even though it is split, the bar seemed quite tight with limited space between each person. On the other hand, the table section provides lots of comfort for all different sizes of groups, due to their long comfortable booths.

Right after entering the restaurant, I was able to sit down immediately next to two other families. Within a minute, I was given water, a menu and asked if I wanted guacamole. There were three different types of guacamole I could have ordered, including regular, mild or spicy. As it was made in front of me, I was overwhelmed by the amount of choices I was able to order from on the menu. The dishes ranged from American type nachos to authentic enchiladas.

I decided to go with the combination where I was able to choose one enchilada, one taco and a quesadilla. Within 15 minutes, I received my dish along with the other dishes that my family had ordered. The plate was huge, but I was able to take on the task of eating this monstrous amount of food. Scattered around the dish were all different types of salsas and hot sauces that could be used on every portion of my dish. For such a complex dish, the presentation was magnificent.

In my combo, I chose the “ultimate cheese enchiladas” for my enchilada course. As I saw the enchilada, I was overwhelmed with how to approach this tower of cheese. I knew I would have to sacrifice the cleanliness of my shirt to eat this delicious enchilada. After taking the first bite, a pile of cheese dripped onto my shirt, but it was well worth it due to the delicious tastes of the enchilada.

For my taco dish, I went simple and chose a “gringo beef taco.” This was nice and small to counter the huge enchilada. This taco had many different flavors making it so good. The shell was nice and crunchy, but the mixed cheeses and ground beef had a softer feel making it better to eat. Although it was small, it was just as messy as the other dishes but unlike the other dish I kept clean.

My last choice for the combo was the steak quesadilla. In the quesadilla, the cheese was melted perfectly and the steak was cooked just as I asked it to be making this quesadilla one of the best I have had. Also, the outer shell was cooked just enough that it was soft enough without it totally falling apart in your lap. Before I ordered, I was debating on the chicken quesadilla, but after eating the steak quesadilla I clearly made the right choice.

Overall, my trip to Rio Bravo made for a great weekend dinner. The service was very quick resulting in a nice and relaxing dinner. I think another positive aspect of this dinner was the pricing of the foods. For the biggest dish on the menu, it costed a total of $15. For very good food and substantial portions, the food was moderately cheap. With all the factors including, I would give my trip to Rio Bravo a seven out of 10, so if you are willing to go out for a authentic mexican dinner I would highly recommend going to Rio Bravo.
