PARENTS AS TEACHERS

Parents as Teachers participated in the Community Block Party last Friday night and then attended art classes at Musser Art Center.

COLORADO ELEMENTARY

Colorado students had their first art club meeting this week! Students in Mrs. Holder's art classes are painting backdrops for our fall festival photo booth.

------------------------------------------

Colorado 4th graders in Mrs. Stewart's and Mrs. Dalbey's classes went to the Buckskinners Rendezvous at Wild Cat Den today. They are learning about Iowa History. Come check it out. They are here all weekend!

FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Phelan's kindergarten students modeled PBIS hallway expectations after lunch.

------------------------------------------

Mrs. Froelich's 1st grade class did a whiteboard activity while sitting on their new learning rug in class.

------------------------------------------

Ms. Bloomquist, Franklin's teacher librarian, taught lessons to 4th grade classes in the media center this week.

GRANT ELEMENTARY

No matter your job title, we all work together to show students we care at Grant School! Mr. Dan, our school custodian, helps a friend with tying his shoe!

------------------------------------------

Grant’s Student Leadership Team taught us all about choosing our own weather during our weekly LEAD assembly!

MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY

Letters, guided reading, book boxes... oh my! Small group reading is our favorite time of the day! Mrs. Pangburn’s kindergarten class is eager to learn and excited to be at McKinley. We are working hard to learn our letter sounds right now. The journey of learning to read should be fun and these kids are on their way to reading success!

------------------------------------------

Students in Ms. Pedersen's 2nd grade class worked on measuring in math this week.

------------------------------------------

The entire student body in Mrs. Hill's art classes at McKinley made a feather for their "dream" wings. Students then wrote what they would like to be when they grow up!

Third graders in Mrs. Hill's art classes made Line Roller Coasters.

------------------------------------------

Check out Mrs. Meyer's budding musicians at McKinley!

------------------------------------------

Students in Mrs. Johnson's class were very busy this week!

------------------------------------------

CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

The sixth grade social students students in Mrs. Larson-Walgren's classes at Central are busy learning a variety of skills and concepts through the JA BizTown curriculum that will allow students to successfully run a simulated city. The pictures below demonstrate students working on basic economics including the concept of a free enterprise system

------------------------------------------

6th-grade social studies students in Mrs. Beatty's class participated in an Expert activity. They declared their expertise on a specific part of the work, then wrote their section on the note and posted it on their forehead for others to see. Students rotated around the room searching for experts to teach them the other parts of information.

------------------------------------------

Congratulations to Central's 6th grade Avenger's Superheroes of the Week.

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students in Mr. LeClere's 7th Grade PLTW Robotics classes worked to build nine different Mechanical Gears. This is the first project for students in Robotics. The nine different mechanical gears show students how gears interact with one another. Once students have finished these builds they will have the foundation to build more complex robotic projects.

MUSCATINE HIGH SCHOOL

Mrs. Coffman's AP Biology students collected isopods aka 'roly-polys' to develop experiments on animal behavior.

------------------------------------------

The 5th Grade Band and Orchestra Kickoff Concert occurred this Monday. All of the 5th grade students came to listen to the High School Band and Orchestra perform and to learn about the instruments. There were also display nights on Monday and Tuesday night for students to sign-up to play an instrument.

If parents did not get their student signed up for band they can contact the band teachers: alyce.spoto@mcsdonline.org, lee.plummer@mcsdonline.org, or orchestra teacher: rachel.plummer@mcsdonline.org

------------------------------------------

Mr. Hennes and Mrs. Clark's Physics Classes had fun exploring different types of motion in order to make it to class on time. Students had to pick two different ways to travel to class and then had to make position versus time graphs and motion maps. Then, they had to compare their data with others' data to choose the best type of motion to get to class on time.

------------------------------------------

Members of the MHS Orchestra Leadership Team (OLT) stayed from 4pm-8pm on Thursday, September 13th, to prepare the 5th grade orchestra instruments for check out next week. They polished, vacuumed cases, febreezed, labeled and tuned all 100+ instruments. Huge thank you to these great kids!

------------------------------------------

Tilapia just arrived today for the Aquaculture tanks in the Greenhouse. Over the next 9 months forestry students will raise the fish. The students had to get the fish to adjust to the new water temperature and also get the system set up and water regulated.

------------------------------------------

The M4 (Mini Mighty Muskie Marching Band) played in the halls after first period on Friday. This is a tradition at the high school on game days. Go Muskies, Beat Johnston!
