Welcome back to Ring Patterns, the Colliesonline.com feature in which we re-cap, month by month, the general achievements of the breed at specialties and all-breeds throughout the country. In September, at the all-breed shows, collies were awarded 24 Group placements and 25 National Owner-handled Series placements. Notable for the month is that a number of shows in Virginia were cancelled because of inclement weather.

There were four Group 1 awards – going to the rough dog, GCHS Scalloway's Lion Hunter, under Judge Jon Cole (101 total Herding entry), smooth dog, GCHS Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue under Judge Joseph Gregory, (60 total Herding entry), rough bitch, CH Milas Look Again under Judge Cathy Daugherty (85 total Herding entry) and smooth dog, GCH Fleur-De-Lis's Day By Day under Walter Sommerfelt (85 total Herding entry).

Group-placing collies total 15 in September

A total of 15 collies recorded placements in September – 3 roughs and 12 smooths. Placements included four Group 1s, three Group 2s, eleven Group 3s, and six Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 7 times compared to 17 for the Smooth Variety.

GCHS Scalloway's Lion Hunter recorded four Group placements, including a Group 1 at Mobile Kennel Club under Judge Jon Cole on September 9. There were 101 herding dogs shown on the day.

GCH Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst was one of 12 smooths, and 15 collies overall, to place in the Herding Group in September.

The largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 169 – at Westchester Kennel Club, in Bridgewater, New Jersey on September 9. The award was a Group 3 and it went to the smooth dog, GCHS Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue. The Herding Group judge was Robert Slay.

National Owner-handled Series

Herding Group judges placed collies 25 times in the AKC's National Owner-handled Series. The placements included five Group 1s, two for the Rough Variety and three for the Smooth Variety. Smooths took 16 placements and the roughs took 9.

GCH Oak Knolls Secret Flame took multiple NOHS placements in September.
