Stephen Brown User Experience Research & Design

Start with Research

Delivering great user experiences requires a solid understanding of both users and business.

Contextual Inquiry

I gather user data through direct observation whenever possible. Methods like contextual inquiry provide a rich set information about user behaviors, mental models, attitudes, expectations, pain-points, and goals.

Surveys & Interviews

I use additional research methods such as surveys and interviews to gain insights into user attitudes, expectations, pain-points and goals.

Qualitative Analysis

I code and interpret qualitative data in order to identify meaningful patterns.

Quantitative Analysis

Where possible, quantitative analysis can provide valuable indicators on the health of an experience.

Personas

I use personas to document my understanding of the environment including different user types and other actors such as the business.

Build the Right Thing

User Scenarios

Narratives describing users accomplishing their goals while using the product. Scenarios help the team focus on user goals and needs.

Competitive Analysis

Competitive analysis builds an understanding of how other companies have approached similar problems and even establish metaphors on which to base new designs.

Sketching

Sketching is a great way to rapidly explore ideas without spending much time or effort.

Conceptual Prototypes

Conceptual prototypes help communicate and test design ideas early in the design process.

Iterate the Design

Build it Right

"Right" Fidelity Prototypes

I use a variety of tools to create a mock-ups and prototypes at the level of detail required for the stage of the project. This "right" fidelity prototype could be anything from a paper sketch to a fully interactive Axure prototype.

User Testing

I test designs early and often, starting with sketchy concepts and iterating through detailed designs to land on final designs that meet user needs and are easy to use.
