Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Gettysburg area school district

Gettysburg Area School District (GASD) is proud to have two of its elementary schools plus the charter school participate in the federally assisted program that helps provide fresh fruit and vegetable opportunities to students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Andrea Lamer’s second grade class at James Gettys Elementary School learned about Valencia oranges before putting them to an official taste test during this interactive learning activity.

Fun facts

James Gettys Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Vida Charter School participate in the program. A few times per week, fresh fruits and vegetables arrive in all of the kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms for each student to taste.

After learning all about Valencia oranges, Mrs. Lamer passes them out to her students to taste.

Tasting the fruit

During the tasting, students decide whether or not they like the fruit or vegetable and then draw a picture of what it looks like before grading it on a scale of whether they enjoyed it or not.

A few of the other offerings included chayote squash, watermelon radish, Mexican Guava and starfruit. To learn more about the program, click on the link below.
