What a Difference a Year Makes

They asked for dinosaurs and we delivered!

Latest and Greatest

A Roaring Debut

Last November, we proudly unveiled the American Museum of Natural History Dinosaur Gallery at COSI, part of an unprecedented new partnership with the nation’s foremost natural history museum. With this development, COSI folds in AMNH's renowned research, education, and exhibit creation expertise into our permanent and traveling exhibition offerings.

The new 13,000-square-foot gallery not only brings together the story of dinosaurs (from the iconic animals that fascinate young and old alike to the evolutionary story of the world's most successful living vertebrates), but also brings the very best in world class dinosaur interpretation and artifacts from New York permanently to Ohio.

As the only location selected to house an AMNH satellite site, Columbus has gained a truly one-of-a-kind educational attraction, contributing to the development on the Scioto Peninsula and adding both local and regional excitement around downtown Columbus’ cultural landscape.

If you haven't already, we hope you will visit to see the new gallery soon!

It was all smiles during Opening Day and our Preview Event. Bottom photo (from left) Guy Worley of Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, Mark Norell and Ellen Futter of AMNH, Abigail Wexner, Les Wexner, and Frederic Bertley.

What People are saying about the gallery:

"It was great! Been to 5+ dinosaur exhibits this year & this one was top notch & unique!"
"...absolutely fantastic, super educational and extensive..."
"This exhibit made us so happy!"

cOSI's Connoisseur of Dinosaurs

joe Wood knows Dinos. Get to know joe.

COSI's not just for kids. It's for all kids-at-heart. Perhaps no one knows this better than Joe Wood. For the past three years, Joe has been programming our monthly COSI After Dark evening events for guests 21 and over. While our first COSI After Dark in 2014 welcomed 386 visitors, COSI After Dark now hosts on average more than 1,500 people per month, with a new attendance record (2,784 people!) set in January.

We think that's pretty cool. Even cooler: Joe holds a Masters degree in paleontology. So not only does Joe help develop our adult audience, but when dinosaurs arrived at COSI, he gained a whole new way of contributing to the guest experience: illuminating natural history concepts from an expert's point of view. Whether educating viewers on Good Day Columbus or appearing as the caped "Captain COSI" to promote COSI After Dark, Joe always helps put the fun in informal learning, mixing the zany and the brainy.

"Like many kids, dinosaurs and paleontology were my initiation into the world of scientific inquiry. While growing up, traveling to another city to visit a natural history museum was not something my family was able to afford, so dinosaurs existed mainly in books and my imagination. What excites me the most about our new Dinosaur Gallery is that local kids like my son will now be able to visit a world class natural history museum right here in Columbus and see dinosaurs up close." - Joe Wood

Kylie Cooks: Future Engineer

local sixth grader connects with sTEM professional at COSI

When Kylie Cooks and her grandparents came to COSI last spring to see Dream Big: Engineering Our World, little did Kylie know she was about to meet her new mentor— Dr. Menzer Pehlivan, a Turkish Civil Engineer and one of three women engineer stars of the film.

Skip ahead a post-film discussion, a meet-and-greet, and an autographed poster later, and Kylie suddenly found herself with an inspiring STEM career role model, passionate about supporting young girls in pursuing their STEM interests and dreams.

As Kylie's grandmother recalls: "One of the things that Kylie came away with is 'Look, you can wear a dress and still wear a hard hat. And it's cool.'"

"She wrote: Dream big, Kylie. Become what you believe in." - Kylie Cooks

According to Kylie, meeting Dr. Pehlivan that day was "awesome, amazing, and wonderful." Shortly after their meeting, Kylie and Dr. Pehlivan began exchanging emails, launching an informal, long-distance mentorship that continues to provide Kylie with future career advice and encouragement to this day.
