Little Big History (Cosmetics) By:bailey Vanzuiden

From the copper and lead ore that the ancient Egyptians used to create the worlds first first cosmetics to the scientifically advanced products of today that can do everything from hide pores, smooth complexions, and turn the pale green of your eyes a vivid shade of emerald makeup has been an integral part of humankind. They used the color blue eyeliner and they used kohl for eyeliner.

In Spain, they used shells to store and mix pigments in them. Animals fat and blubber were used to keep the skin nice and smooth. In about 300 BC there was pots found that they used to keep creams, paints, and pigments in. Woman would put a Toxic white lead to there face to try to have the nice white skin look, golden hair and etc, because that is what was nice back then. Then for there lips they used a paste mixed with olive oil.

Woman through out history out their health at risk with many of their homemade cosmetics. In some cultures woman used arsenic, lead, mercury, and even leeches to give themselves the pale appearance deemed beautiful in the old days. Cosmetics has come a long way from the days of using toxic and deadly mixtures to enhance our looks.

In different countries woman would use burnt matches to darken their eyes, they also used berries to stain their lips and young boys' urine to fade their freckles. They would even swallow ox blood in some misguided attempt to improve their complexions.

With over 10 thousand years of experience, chemists, cometologist, fashion designers, religoius leaders, and government had incredible impact over the world of cosmetics. Because it is in human mature to always strive to perfection and new-ways to express ourselves, cosmetic played a really big role in our advancements.

Back then both male and female were wearing makeup but they would wear it as face paint and would wear black or blue eyeliner to keep the sin out of there eyes while they worked. As time went on the society thought only females were supposed to wear makeup which isn't both male and female can wear makeup it may be a shock to people that guys where makeup but there is no rule that males could not where makeup. Also people think if females where makeup they will attract males, or they have to wear makeup to feel pretty which is okay to a point.

Now that you know a little bit about how they made the makeup and also how they used it. I think cosmetics relates to thresholds 1,2,3, and 4 (The big bang, stars light up, new chemical elements, and earth and the solar system.

How it relates to Threshold 4: Earth and the Solar System, because elements in makeup are also key ingredients to entire plants and solar systems, including the earth and surrounding solar system increasing complexity. Makeup is prevalent over other parts of the beauty industry because it is a fantastic example of increasing complexity, not just in its physical change, but also in the modification of it's use.

The next threshold is Threshold 6: Collective Learning, because early humans used makeup primarily as a form of camouflage. Also back then they had different, and better ingredients for the usage of makeup, the reason why is because Collective Learning and its influence on humanity and the world.

Then the next threshold I think fits in with cosmetics is Threshold 7: Agriculture, because as Agrarian Civilization developed, humans used more and more makeup in better ways and ways we are more familiar with. In the middle ages makeup was known immoral by the church, and was technically outlawed because some of the ingredients in the makeup that was used was actually poisonous. The lead was used as foundation, kohl, and eyeliner. Makeup had changed the standard of beauty throughout history, as it went from demanding that everyone is pale as ice to the more natural look that is valued today.

The next threshold is threshold 8: The Modern Revolution, because The Modern Revolution has added infinitely to the size of the makeup industry. This was brought about by Interconnection. The concept of one thing connecting to another, previously unrelated thing, interconnection is sped along by acceleration. Acceleration- Things move at a faster pace.
