Taking Time to Reflect

Keep your face always towards the sunshine and shadows will fall behind you. -Walt Whitman

As we wrap up the month I wanted to give you a heads up about some of the things we are doing in light of the academic and behavioral needs of our students. One of the things that we have been grappling with is the level of maturity of our students that is tied directly to a lack of school structure that our students have been accustomed to for most of their academic career. This is not just a BMMS thing. Nationwide there is an uptick (no pun intended) in negative student behaviors since the start of this school year. The last time our students had a normal academic year was in the 2018-19 school year This makes our current students 3, 4 and 5th graders socially. Consequently, we cannot take for granted the nuances of what we do to build culture, foster relationships and to maintain high expectations. I had great conversations with students in each grade level who will now serve on the newly established Principal Advisory. It was helpful for me to hear their perspective as I work toward making decisions about our next steps. I am hopeful that we will regain the right type of focus necessary to ensure that every student has the foundation to be successful in and outside of the classroom.

Tomorrow and Friday we will be hosting an Academic Excellence meeting and a Student Expectation meeting for all grade levels. In these meetings we will have a heart to heart conversation about what the data has shown us about student behaviors and achievement, what the trajectory will be if changes are not made and a plan that is in place to support students. As always all we need is your continued reinforcement of expectations while they are at home.

Counselor's Corner

As the holidays approach, the BMMS counseling department is working to help provide for families in need.

Fayette County has partnered with Southside Toys for Tots to provide economically disadvantaged children with toys and sports equipment. Financially struggling families with students currently enrolled in Fayette County Public Schools can request toys and sports equipment for any children living in their household (ages birth to 15 years old) by filling out this Toy Request form (https://forms.gle/A7miJzpdEejKKN7w7). The deadline for submitting requests is November 10th.

Parents can also reach out to their students' school counselors for additional needs of essential items such as clothes, coats, shoes, etc. through the Angel Tree Program. Please inquire before November 1st.
