Special Education Team
AGCS is committed to implementing appropriate programming for students identified with a disability. Special education teachers wear many hats and serve the role of case manager, interventionist, co-teacher, and mentor. Here at AGCS, the special education teachers are not the only ones invested in student success. We take an inclusive, “all hands on deck” approach, which enables collaboration amongst all key players: regular education teachers, related service providers, nurses, reading interventionists, guidance counselors, mental health coordinators, behaviorists, administrators, PCAs, and of course- parents!
If your child needs assistance navigating any aspects of our Continuous Learning Plan, please reach out to your child’s case manager. We are happy to collaborate to ensure your child continues to receive accommodations and modifications necessary for his/her success. Live virtual learning opportunities will continue to take place throughout the week to address your child’s needs in reading, math, speech, fine/gross motor skills, social/emotional skills, and mental health. If the school closure has presented a new obstacle for your child that requires new support that (s)he was not previously receiving, we are happy to discuss possible interim services to address the immediate need.

Continuity of Education
During the extended school closure for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year, AGCS continues to provide standards-aligned, meaningful instruction and supplemental support to our students. Instruction is a combination of both asynchronous, individual work and synchronous live instruction. Students receive instruction focused on new concepts originally planned as per the school’s curriculum for the final quarter of the school year, as well as enrichment and remediation opportunities as needed. Our plan’s goal is to provide and leverage flexibility while providing students with similar learning experiences and content exposure as they would have received had schools not been closed. Our plan includes a strong commitment to equity and ensuring that our students receiving special education services and ELL support are provided the necessary services, accommodations, modifications, and support needed to be successful. Avon Grove Charter School also aims at maintaining the strong connections built with students and families while reducing anxiety and stress amid this global pandemic. We will continue to seek parent, student, and staff feedback related to our Continuity of Education plan and will make adjustments and modifications as needed to meet the changing educational landscape and the needs of our students.
Fair Funding Update
Right now, lawmakers are negotiating the 2020-21 state budget. Fair funding for public schools is still very much alive in Harrisburg. AGCS is working with the Pennsylvania Coalition for Public Charter Schools to provide assistance where able to implement positive change and equitable funding for all public schools throughout the Commonwealth.
Class of 2020 Graduation Information
COVID 19/School Closure/Graduation Waiver
Board of Trustees suspends the requirements it has established for graduation from High School for the 2019-2020 school year and establishes AGCS new grading guidelines for the final quarter of the 19/20 school year which will apply to high school students, including seniors, and their academic course work.
AGCS is currently evaluating options regarding the Class of 2020 year-end activities. Kindergarten and 8th-grade graduation will be virtual and some very creative and memorable planning has already started. The AGCS senior class of 2020 will be celebrated. They have completed a survey and are looking forward to many options that were presented.
Transportation Form Notice
Per guidelines from the PA Department of Education, Pennsylvania school districts are required to have a new/updated transportation form on file for all new and returning students every school year. All AGCS families will be required to provide an updated transportation request form for ALL students on a yearly basis.
For this year, we have digitized your school district’s transportation form for easy data collection.
During the week of April 27, 2020, you will receive an individual email with your specific school district of residence’s digital transportation form.
This form is required to be completed by every family whether you are requesting or declining transportation services by your district.
Form completion date is June 1, 2020. If this form is not completed by June 1, your home school district has indicated that you may not have transportation arrangements for your student(s) for the start of the 20-21 school year.
Avon Grove Charter School is committed to community communication. We are in the process of updating our website. The new website is well designed and will provide even better navigation.
AGCS has been in constant, ongoing communication with its staff, families, students and stakeholders throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The AGCS Community has received regular email communication via SchoolMessenger informing them of school-based decisions related to the school closure, instruction, athletics, events, and activities. We have communicated regularly related to our Continuity of Education plan and learning expectations.
We have set up a COVID-19 School Resource page within our website which houses copies of all communications and documents related to the school plans for education throughout the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. We have also developed general FAQs to help parents find answers to common questions.
School administration is hosting regular webinars to check-in and communicate with families. These webinars are being hosted via Zoom and streamed to the school’s YouTube and Facebook pages. All AGCS staff are trained to follow secure Zoom protocols.
Our Head of School also has begun a regular video blog (Corona Diaries) to increase communication and provide an insight into her home during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Finally, our Communications and Social Media team has been leveraging the school’s social media platforms to keep our community connected and informed.
A major goal of the school during this period of closure has been to continue to try to have students feel connected to the school and one another. We have developed and planned a number of fun activities for students to participate throughout the rest of the year that includes virtual fire drills, spirit weeks, and online assemblies.
