In an urban documentary exercise, Pape recorded the streets and corners of Paris and Delft while on his observational walks. The purpose of this footage, however, was not to function as a reference for direct representation but rather as an examination of the metropolitan space.
The exhibition also features three sketchbooks, made over the span of 7 years and in which the first approaches to the objects depicted in the oil paintings can be recognized. Made swiftly and on the spot, these sketches capture Paris in motion, urban, dynamic and leafy. Although the subjects of the sketches are prosaic details of the city, they maintain a picturesque charm emphasized by the soft watercolour brush strokes and the snappy movement of Pape's pen.
