Cabra Matters Term 3 Week 8 2018

Principal's Report

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

I would like to thank the many parents and carers who attended the interviews to discuss student achievement and areas for improvement. These were very productive meetings which help students, parents and carers better understand student progress.

In particular, I would like to thank the teachers who gave up their time to prepare and meet with parents to share this information.

I would like to thank the many school community members who have cast their vote for our school motto. Just a reminder that voting closes on the last day of this term, Friday September 28.

Once we have decided on the motto, I will be inviting school community members to write a school song which reflects the motto and the school’s purpose. More information in Term 4.

Many of our students and teachers are working very hard to prepare for our annual musical production called ‘STARSTRUCK’. I am certain that this production will meet and exceed the extremely high standard of performance set by the school in previous years. The performances will be held on:

Tuesday, September 25 - 11.30 am

Wednesday, Sept. 26 - 11.30 am/6.30 pm

Thursday, September 27 - 11.30 am/6.30 pm

Your child has received an invitation outlining the process for buying tickets which are $5 for children and $10 for adults. I hope that you can join us for a celebration of music, acting, dancing and costuming which maintains a long tradition of performance excellence at Cabramatta.

At this week’s P and C meeting a suggestion to improve the school sports uniform was discussed. The P and C have voted to introduce polo shirts in the House colours of red, blue, white and green for students to wear on their designated Sports Day. For Years 3 to 6 students, this is Friday and for Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2 students, this is Thursday.

The cost of the shirt, which includes the school logo, will only be $10. We are now ordering these shirts and will let you know when they will be available for purchase in Term 4. These House coloured shirts are of good quality and can be worn during our special sports carnivals, such as athletics and cross country. I look forward to seeing our students wear their House colours with pride.

I am very pleased to report that we have some outstanding speakers at our school who participated in the Finals to find our best public speakers. Speakers were required to present a prepared speech and an impromptu, which is a speech about an unknown topic with only five minutes preparation time.

The results for each stage are:

Kindergarten: 1st – Alice Seng, 2nd – Hillary Lam

Stage 1: 1st – Vincent Nguyen, 2nd – Matthew Huor

Stage 2: 1st - Malisa Seng, 2nd - Justin Trung Nguyen

Stage 3: 1st - Awatea Olapu Vella, 2nd - Yasin Albayrak

Congratulations to our winning speakers. They will now represent the school in a competition with all other public schools in the Fairfield area. We wish them well in a very tough competition.

Each year, our school applies for grants to fund special programs to support our families. We have been successful in gaining $9,680 from Mekong Mounties Club for a Water Safety Awareness Program for Families. We will be utilising the funds to assist families with the cost of the School Swimming and a Water Safety Education Program, including Parent/Carer information sessions in term 4.

We were also successful in receiving a grant for $6,300 from Cabra-Vale Diggers Club to pay for the school’s Healthy Breakfast Club which is held every Monday and Friday morning.

I would like to sincerely thank Mekong Mounties and Cabra-Vale Diggers Clubs for their generosity and support of our school and families.

Kindest regards,

Glen Stelzer

Year 1 Taronga Zoo Excursion

On Tuesday 4th September, Year 1 went on an excursion to Taronga Zoo. In our Science program, we have been learning about animal habitats and enclosures and the way in which their environment is used and designed. We were able to see many different animals and enclosures and identify features of different habitats. As well as seeing these environments, we watched a variety of shows such as ‘The Seal Show’ and ‘The Bird Show.’ We had a wonderful time and we are now writing information reports about some of the animals we saw at the zoo. If you are looking for experts on giraffes, penguins or lions, come and visit year 1!

Avalon Public School Visit

On Wednesday 5th September, 5/6N, 6E, 6K, 6S and 6C welcomed their Avalon Public School pen pals. It was their first meeting. After a guided tour of the school, all students, Avalon parents and teachers shared an amazing lunch that was provided by our Year 6 families. The students played games and spent some quality time together. Thank you to Mr Nile for coordinating this program and a special thank you to Mrs Macias and Miss Maree for organising the food in the hall. The Cabramatta students can’t wait for the return visit to Avalon PS next term.

Author and Illustrator Visit

Author Oliver Phommavanh visited our school recently. His presentation kept all who attended entertained whilst demonstrating the skills and craft needed to be a successful published author.

Maths Cup Report

On Thursday, 6th September, nine students from Year Six represented Cabramatta Public School at the Maths Cup, which was held at Amity College, Prestons. Forty-six schools, 100 teams and 300 students participated in the competition, with one team coming from as far as Adelaide. There were many private and state schools participating in this prestigious competition.

Our students participated in three different events, which involved complex problem-solving skills. They performed admirably and unfortunately missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals. I would like to thank our students for their great efforts on the day. We will receive further feedback on each team’s performance from the competition convenors by email. I must congratulate the convenors of the competition for their outstanding hospitality and running of the competition.

The three Maths Cup teams consisted of the following boys and girls:

Team One: Jamie Phan 5/6N, Ricky Yi 5/6N, Ricky Tong 5/6N

Team Two: Angus Chea 5/6N, Justin Tran 5/6N, Brien Quach 6S

Team Three: Jessica Sengmany 5/6N, Amelea Eap 5/6N, Benjamin Van 5/6N
