LEAP Quarterly Volume 2 Issue 1, October 2016

Director's Corner

Dear Students,

It is FALL! My favorite season of the year! Spiritual seasons come into our lives just like the earthly seasons God brings each year. The earth needs each of these seasons to replenish. Likewise, we God’s children are pruned and developed by the different spiritual seasons in our lives. Appreciate whatever spiritual season of life you’re in, with confidence that it is for your good, and another season is just around the corner.

Blessings, Dr. Holt.

LEAP START 2016

The goal of LEAP START is to help bridge the gap between high school and college by fostering a learning community with academic and non-academic resources necessary for college success.

Many of you had the opportunity of participating in our first annual fall orientation program which was held August 17th to the 22nd. During this time, the first-time freshmen enjoyed a sidewalk tour in downtown Chattanooga on August 18th. This was followed by a delicious dinner at Five Guys.

We ended the orientation with a cultural excursion to the Old Woolen Mill in downtown Cleveland. The students enjoyed a catered meal while learning about the history of the Mill and Hardwick Clothing from one of Lee's History professors, Dr. Coats.

NEW Student Orientation

Our Gateway students also took part in Lee University's new student orientation on the 20th and 21st of August. This orientation ended with a Deke Day - a day of service to the Cleveland community.

PERSONAL ENRICHMENT WORKSHOP

HEALTHY COMMUNICATIONS-HOME/LIFE

In September, one of our LEAP coaches, Christian McGirt, engaged students in a interactive workshop on the importance of listening and healthy communication.

LEAP SERVICE PROJECT

In a coordinated effort with Boots on the Ground, students were able to distribute lunches, backpacks, and toiletries to the homeless of the greater Chattanooga area, September 24th . Through this ministry, both the students and the homeless were impacted spiritually, physically, and mentally. Here's a recap of the project...

CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT

All students want to feel cared for, respected, connected, and safe in college. Sense of belonging is a basic human need, sufficient to drive human behavior. Academic factors only account for 25% of post-secondary outcomes (i.e. success after college). Money accounts for about 15%. So what accounts for the 60%? You guessed right! It's thesense of belonging. Here's a great video on the importance of engaging on campus to engender that sense of belonging.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

The Beavers

Megan and Emily Beavers are LOcals from the Cleveland, TN area.

They are twins, who are similar with their heartwarming smiles but unique in their distinctive goals and future plans. They are both members of Sigma Nu Sigma here at Lee and enjoy attending awesome concerts together.

MEGAN BEAVERS

"I AM MOTIVATED BY MY DREAMS, NO MATTER HOW CRAZY OR RIDICULOUS OR OUT OF REACH THEY ARE, BECAUSE I TRULY WANT TO LOOK BACK ON MY LIFE ONE DAY AND SAY THAT I HAVE DONE ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO. I HOPE TO HAVE NO REGRETS (YES I KNOW, SUPER CLICHÉ BUT SO TRUE!)"

Megan is a Digital Media major with an emphasis in Journalism whose main love is photography. Her future goal is to be a well known portrait and wedding photographer here in the South East (and possibly a teacher in photography). She dreams of touring with a band as the group's personal photographer and/or working as a photojournalist in the National Geographic Magazine.

Megan is not just a Sigma girl in her sophomore year at Lee, she has also won the Freshman English award and is currently a Lee Presidential scholar and a Rymer scholar. This scholarship is awarded annually by the Rymer Foundation to honor exceptional achievement and encourage high school students in the area to continue their education in Cleveland. Megan loves everything about the LEAP Program. She says,

"really, I never expected to actually feel like I have benefited from this program. I love the accountability that the weekly mentor meetings give, and the careful planning that takes place at the monthly coach meetings- which are all about bettering me in my schooling and daily life! It doesn't get much better than that!"

Emily Beavers

"What motivates me is to just live, truly and purely live to the best of my ability and never take anything for granted. In Everything I do in life, I want to be able to look back and not have any regrets."

Emily is a sophomore at Lee who hopes to enjoy all that Lee University has too offer. She intends on graduating with a Bachelors in Business Management (Marketing Emphasis). Following her time at Lee, Emily desires to spend a year in New York at a fashion school to gain the skills required for Merchandise Marketing. Whether it be staying in my hometown of Cleveland, TN or living in New York. Emily hopes to work in a major fashion company or open her own boutique.

A member of Sigma Nu Sigma, Emily works at Ever After Bridal as a bridal consultant. As a former member of the Lee Cheer team, she currently serves as the assistant cheerleading coach at Bradley Central High School where she motivates student athletes and prepares them for competitions. In her response to the best thing about the LEAP program, she says,

The LEAP program is so amazing for so many reasons; the constant encouragement that is shown to me through LEAP is something that could not be replaced.
