RENEW: Sleep Providing simple tools to help renew you in a post COVID-19 world

As we all navigate the pandemic and look to rebuild a sense of normality, routine and restore our lives that are potentially very different from before, it is important to remember that each one of us will have been impacted by COVID-19. Our wellbeing, our mental, emotional and physical health will have been impacted.

Renew is a series of short development sessions designed for adults which you can do when and how best suits you. It has three key parts: an overview to Learn about the theme, some key content to Engage with; video, blog or something else and then something to Practice to help you develop the tools and skills needed to renew you. Each session should take no more than 30 minutes.

Learn: Sleep

We spend around one third of our lives asleep. Sleep is vital for our wellbeing – it is like food for our brain; therefore, it is essential that we make sleep a priority, a non-negotiable in our lives. Sleep can help with alertness, memory, learning, increased immunity and boosts our mood and energy. Sleep restores our body and helps us to get ready for the next day. However, if you have been struggling with sleep, especially during the pandemic you are not alone. According to the National sleep survey 75% of people have found that their sleep has been affected.

Engage

Listen to this TED Talk by Matt Walker who talks on the topic of sleep being our superpower and the impact sleep has on both our brain and body.

This TED Talk is 19 minutes in length.

Questions to reflect on based on the TED talk:

  1. How can you build regularity into your sleep pattern to improve the quality and quantity of your sleep?
  2. Reflect on the mission critical statement that Matt Walker sates “Sleep unfortunately is not an optional lifestyle luxury, sleep is a non-negotiable biological necessity, it is your life support system, and it is mother’s nature best yet at immortality.” What does this look like for you and your personal circumstances to make sure that sleep becomes a non-negotiable necessity?
  3. What is one stand out take home message for you from the TED Talk?
