Derek Fritz joins MSD staff

Walking up and down the halls, Derek Fritz keeps an eye on Marjory Stoneman Douglas each day as one of the new campus monitors.

Fritz began his job this year and he has already become well acclimated with the school, faculty and students.

“My job is to walk around campus during and in between classes making sure kids are where they need to be,” Fritz said.

Security has become a very crucial role at our school. Fritz can be seen at the senior lot entrance checking ID badges as kids walk through the gates.

“I have yet to run into any major problems with any students. They are high schoolers and I understand they can be rambunctious and there will be times where the try to test me, but I just want to be respectful to the kids because I want the kids to be respectful to me,” Fritz said.

Aside from his role as campus monitor, he has also taken the responsibility of coaching the junior varsity baseball team.

“He is an awesome addition to the team. He fits in really well.” senior Thomas Pogacsas said.

Fritz is excited to begin coaching with what he has in store for the team.

“Growing up I played baseball. I actually graduated from the University of North Carolina where I played baseball” Fritz said. “Baseball was a huge part of my life so I am just excited that I get to share my passion and wisdom with the younger generation.”

As Fritz adjust to his new job on campus, students will be able to familiarize themselves with our new security staff. Their faces will become friendly reminders of how important security and safety is at MSD.
