Blue Course Aerification.....
As you may be aware, the Blue Course greens are scheduled to be aerated beginning next Monday, May 1st. As they are in the final stages of healing from the winter vertical aeration, we wanted to provide an update with insight on why we aerate, the benefits of aeration, and what to expect regarding the condition of the greens in the weeks ahead.
Committing to our plan for aeration will provide the environment necessary for maintaining a healthy environment for turf growth, just beneath the greens surface. In order to protect the greens, and to keep them in their very best condition, it's extremely important that we remove and replace 20% or more of the bent grass greens soil profile with sand each year. The soil profile that is being amended is in the top 1-3 inches below the turf surface. Aerating three times annually is consistent with the best practices widely accepted for Bent Grass greens, and strongly encouraged by USGA, PGA, and GCSAA agronomists. (For more on this click here).
The benefits of aeration and topdressing are an investment from year to year. Simply put, aeration is the single most important agronomic practice in producing firm surfaces through which water, oxygen and nutrients can flow to the roots. This provides the environment, when combined with sunlight and airflow, for optimal turf health. As mentioned above, it helps us maintain the greens profile under the putting surfaces to clearly defined parameters that predict success. A healthy environment in the green profile ultimately leads to smoother, firmer and more consistent putting surfaces over the long term.
The interruption to the greens that will result from our May aeration will be consistent with that of last year. Recovery, while dependent on air temperature, soil temperature and moisture, should have the greens close to “tournament condition” heading into June. And best of all we'll have made another deposit towards their long-term health. Exciting for all of us…there is so much to look forward to in the coming weeks.
If you are interested in learning more about our aeration process or have any questions about the greens please let me know direct at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for your continued support!
