epiphany studios Pop-up: Shapero Lounge
Light is bouncing off delicate, color-saturated glass in the Woodward Avenue windows of the Shapero Lounge, where epiphany—a collaborative glass blowing studio— will be showing and selling work at a DSO pop-up throughout January.
epiphany studio is helmed by artisan April Wagner. Born in Muskegon, April is a natural artist whose interest in form, color, and line were apparent since early childhood. Her discovery of glass blowing in college laid the foundation for her successful career:
“I was in love with ceramics, but then I tried glassblowing and realized I never wanted to work in clay again, I’d found the thing I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
The Shapero Lounge can be accessed directly from Woodward Avenue at Parsons St., or via the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center during events. Store hours are Thurs/Fri/Sat 4-9pm, and Sun 11am-4pm.
You may have sat next to Jackie and Kevin Kolpasky in Orchestra Hall, with an open bag of MichiGummies in your hand, without realizing they are the creators of the flavorful Shurms candies sold in the William Davidson Atrium for concert snacking.
A PNC Pops subscriber for two seasons, Kevin recalls the fun of attending Christmas Pops concerts as a child in the 1970's, and is thrilled that Shurms Candy might become part of your own symphony memories.
Proudly based in Oakland Township, and shaped like the mitten state, MichiGummies are infused with flavors such as world-famous Michigan cherry. While the gummies won't make your winter warmer, they do promise to bring the taste of summers up north into your stockings.
The colorful packaging of MichiGummies never fails to draw patrons over when they enter the Shop @ The Max!
Pete's Chocolate Co.
Music isn't the only thing made at The Max: Pete's Chocolate Co. create their hand-rolled truffles and hot chocolate mix in the DSO kitchen —the premier catering facility where your Paradise Café fare is cooked. When Pete Steffy is in working, the smell of cocoa wafting from the stove tops makes a delicious backdrop for the music coming from Orchestra Hall:
Sometimes I’ll make a phone call for my business from the kitchen and wonder if the person on the other end of the phone realized that the background music on my end is a live world-class symphony orchestra!
Pete's Chocolate Co. began as a passion project in 2009 after Pete returned to Detroit from a one year stay in the small Mexican city of San Cristóbal de las Casas, where he studied the art of chocolate with a chocolatier named Iván Arce. Back in Detroit, he began experimenting with his own recipes for both classic and unusual flavors.

The Renaissance Center could be viewed in the distance from Ford Road just a block from my childhood home in Dearborn Heights. I would stand in the turn lane with six lanes of traffic whizzing by and feel the pride of this city...This work honors Detroit and it's special places, buildings, and history.
